Whether it is 'Shirphool Shiraima...' sung by artist Amrit Gurung almost a decade ago or the song 'Rukum Makot...' written by Surendra Rana recently, Rukum is very popular. Like the words of this song which has been viewed tens of millions of times on YouTube, Rukum Purva is really beautiful, charming and also worth visiting.
Rukum East, which extends from the summit of Putha Himal, which is the highest at 7,246 meters in Lambini, to the Tatopani spring in Pokhara, which is at an altitude of about 1,100 meters, has been listed by the Government of Nepal as an 'excellent travel destination'. Spread over an area of 1 lakh 13 thousand 523 hectares, Rukum East has three municipalities. It is also known as 'Kancho District'.
In 2073, when the state was restructured according to the concept of federalism, Rukum was divided into two districts, East and West. That is why it is called 'Kancho Zilla'. Apart from this, Rukum East is also the only Himalayan district of Lumbini Province. This district, which has a slightly different identity and characteristics from other 11 districts, is a place with immense potential in terms of organic agriculture and tourism.
Along with Putha, Sisne, Dogari, Samjung and Nimku Himals above 5000 meters are here, while Kamaltal, Pupal Dah, Gupta Dah, Sun Dah and Sampe, etc., can hardly be described in words.
Dhorpatan, Nepal's only game reserve on the western side of the Dhaulagiri mountain range, also covers 60 percent of this district. Sisne is danced to Vanghari vaka and Paseru Lahoro, while Bhume and Putha are sung in Yanimaya vaka and chhamchham is danced in Bhume dance. In Rukum East, where there is diversity in language, geography, customs and culture, this diversity is bound by the rope of unity.
If you look at the population, there is a majority of tribes here, especially those who speak the Magar Kham language. Multilingualism also has its own identity. Our love for each other is the hallmark of the district,' says Ramusur Budha, the former chairman of Bhume Rural Municipality.
Rukum East can be described as a very important district from various natural, religious, cultural and archaeological points of view. The main road of Rukum East District, which is also the origin of the armed struggle conducted by the CPN-Maoist at that time, is also called the "Guerrilla Road". According to Man Bahadur, a tourism businessman, this route started from around the historical Chunbang, which was declared by the then Maoists as their 'special base area', and will go from Rukumkot through Dandaidanda to Banfikot in Rukum West.
"Guerrilla Marg can also be developed as a commercial trail," he said, "a map has been made for this about 15 years ago."
