After two days of continuous rain, communication services were affected in different parts of the country. On Saturday, there was a problem with telephone and internet services due to the interruption of electricity supply to half of Kathmandu Valley. In some mountainous areas, the telephone towers operated by solar energy were shut down due to lack of continuous sun for the last few days.

Due to the lack of electricity and solar power, the Transceiver Station (BTS) site is down and there is a problem in communication services, according to telecom companies.

Nepal Telecommunication Company Limited (Nepal Telecom) has informed that the telephone communication has started to be disrupted after the BTS tower went down due to the lack of electricity in various places. According to the company, there were many problems especially in Lalitpur area on Saturday. "We had a challenge to keep the service running in Wagmati and Koshi," said Nepal Telecom spokesperson Hari Dhakal, "There was a problem in Lalitpur within the Kathmandu Valley."

Spokesperson Dhakal said that more BTS sites are down in Kathmandu than ever before. He said there is a risk that more sites may go down after the battery backup fails. "We are trying to set up the site by running generators wherever possible as a backup plan," he said.

Spokesperson Dhakal says that communication services have been affected especially in the upper parts of the eastern region. "Since the tower is operated by solar power, there is no energy since yesterday and this evening," he said. Nepal Telecom has said that it is coordinating with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and the Telecommunication Authority to provide informative information about floods, landslides, inundation and weather. The telecom is also delivering messages through SMS and ring back tones.

The company said that the service of Ncell, which was interrupted for some time on Saturday morning, has resumed operations since the afternoon. Ncell said that the service was able to start with the efforts of its technical team and the support of Nepal Electricity Authority. In various places including Kathmandu Valley, telephone and internet wires were damaged, when electricity service was interrupted due to flooding, the BTS tower was down and the phone did not work, and there were problems with internet service due to lack of electricity. 

Nepal Internet Service Providers Association (ISPAN) has reported that there is a problem in the wired and wireless internet networks due to power outages and solar power not shining. Sudhir Parajuli, the president of ISPAN, said that there was more influence in the western region. "The problem happened because of the electricity," he said, "because the Internet service providers designed the network in their own way, some people's network went down. Even though the network was broken in one place, the service was not interrupted because it was running from another place.' 

The broadcast of Epiwan HD Television under Annapurna Media Network has been stopped after flooding in the office premises. Editor-in-Chief Dipendra Bantawa informed that the broadcast was stopped from 7 am on Saturday. According to him, the electricity service in the office is currently interrupted due to the flood. "Broadcasting has stopped because office vehicles, computers, backups and other materials have been flooded," he said.

On Saturday afternoon, the Ministry of Communication held an emergency meeting with service providers on how to make communication services easy and effective during the crisis. Even though telecom companies inform about floods, landslides and inundation through SMS, the information could not reach the places where the service was disrupted. 

The government has included electricity, telephone, communication and internet services as essential services. However, these services are interrupted when there is a small problem. There are constant questions from the public about the interruption of services at the right time. When contacting the Ministry of Communication and Nepal Telecommunication Authority on Saturday evening to get information about the latest status of communication services, the leaders of both sides did not want to speak. 

'Telecommunications Authority knows about this, you should ask there,' said Communications Secretary Radhika Aryal, 'This is a matter for the Authority.' He also said that the authority as a regulator is encouraging the operators for effective service delivery.
