On Saturday, the news that the conflict between India and Pakistan has stopped has brought relief not only to the citizens of those two countries but also to all the countries of South Asia. In the meantime, despite concerns about security issues, neighboring SAARC member countries Bangladesh and Sri Lanka remained silent. It means that this India-Pakistan conflict will not last long as in the past and they wanted to stop it themselves. Although the two-sided unrest in the border area has not stopped completely, regional security is expected to improve.
Most of the countries protested the attack by terrorists in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 tourists. Nepal also issued a statement through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday and made it clear that it will be with us in the fight against terrorism. After some countries including Turkey and China reacted to the air attack by India as sad, there were estimates that the conflict would be prolonged.
In the meantime, American President Donald Trump gave information through social media that the conflict between India and Pakistan has stopped. A lot of analysis is being done after the US President announced the cease-fire before India-Pakistan. India's defense system, Pakistan's use of China's weapons, or India-Pakistan internally do not want war in the current situation, etc. are going on. Currently, both the countries have not given clear information about what role the US has played in preventing the conflict between the two countries. During this period, India-Pakistan has not made public the exact data of who suffered human and material losses.
Peace efforts after Trump's arrival
In the US, Donald Trump took the initiative to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine after taking over the government. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at the White House on February 28. Which the British Prime Minister also tried to play a coordinating role . But the meeting did not find a way to solve the Russia-Ukraine problem, but instead brought a coldness in the relationship between Trump and Zelensky. After the
, the governments and heads of state of the European countries held a British meeting in Britain. After more than three years of war, the economic situation of not only Ukraine, but also of Europe as a whole is weakening, they are looking for an alternative to peace talks with Russia.
Since then, Egypt and Qatar tried to coordinate to resolve the conflict between Hamas and Israel. Although Qatar is coordinating to stop the unrest in the Middle East, it is not succeeding. In the meantime, confusion remains after Hamas, Israel pulled out of the mediator of the talks. The release of those held hostage by Hamas has also been halted.
In such a situation, the current conflict between India and Pakistan had created fear that the wave of religious extremism could rise again. which is believed to stop .
India is looking for Masood Azhar
India has concluded that The Resistance Front (TRF) is involved in the April 22 incident. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri claimed that the TRF has a relationship with Laskaretoywa . India has accused Masood Azhar of being the leader of all the attacks. India claims to have attacked Azhar's fighter recruitment center and ideological military center.
Azhar was living in Bahawalpur, Pakistan since 1968. He studied at Jamia Uloom-Al-Islamia Islamic University in Karachi, the biggest city in Pakistan. He was also arrested in Indian-administered Kashmir in 1994. His name, who went to India with a Portuguese passport via Bangladesh, came into the limelight when a tourist was kidnapped in Kashmir in 1995.
Now India is looking for the same Azhar as its main enemy . Azhar has been listed as a terrorist. On December 24, 1999, when an Air India flight from Kathmandu to New Delhi was hijacked, Masood, who was in Indian custody, was also released on the condition that the hijacker held him.
What should Nepal do now?
Even though the war between the two countries stopped immediately, the challenge of Nepal's border security remains. The Armed Police Force has mobilized more than 10,000 troops in the 1880 km border area with India. In the last three days, patrols have been doubled in all border areas and surveillance is being increased in suspicious areas. Armed forces are conducting security checks at more than 1800 locations.
In addition, surveillance is high in cities other than the border as there may be infiltration of a criminal group . Nepali security personnel have analyzed the possible challenges in mosques and religious places. The presence of the armed police alone is not enough. Since the security situation of the India Pakistan conflict and other South Asian countries is not so easy, it is time for Nepal to invest in the security of its border area.
Not only India's interest, but also for Nepal's own security, the government should not delay in providing the technology demanded by the armed forces at the open border. Since the
, the only intelligence mechanism, the National Investigation Department, has also had to be restructured . Just as India's intelligence system is said to have failed in the killing of 26 tourists on April 22, it is time to think and plan so that Nepal's information system is not weakened.
When the information system is weak, other security agencies cannot work effectively . Therefore, if not only the government but all the political parties are unable to reach a consensus to increase the capacity of the National Investigation Department, our security system may not be so strong.
We have not been able to make the Secretariat of the National Security Council which can analyze for national security effective. The secretariat of the National Security Council should be a very powerful mechanism as an integrated mechanism involving all the four security agencies (the Nepali army chief, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and the DIG of the National Investigation Department). But it has been made a place to hold officers who don't like it in those organizations . Nepal can strengthen its security system if the National Security Council under the leadership of the Prime Minister strengthens the Secretariat and seriously studies the reports coming from there.
Therefore, in the current situation, Nepal has no choice but to strengthen all the security mechanisms it has. When security is strong, not the government and the opposition, citizens and the country can be safe, which is mandatory.
