On this day (July 4) in 1946, the Philippines gained independence. After independence from the US, Manuel Roxas became the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

The Philippines was a Spanish colony since 1565. Since then there have been rebellions at various times for independence. After the war of 1896, a peace treaty was signed between the Philippines and Spain. But two years later, due to the war between Spain and America, tension arose between the two countries in Manila Bay.

At the same time, Philippine general Emilio Aguinaldo defeated Spain and established a revolutionary government. The Spanish-American War ended with the Treaty of Paris in December 1898. According to the agreement, Spain, which is ready to withdraw from the Philippines, had set the condition that the Philippines should remain a colony of the United States.

But after the agreement between America and Spain was violated, the independence war broke out in the Philippines. Two years later, Aguinaldo was arrested and the United States established rule in the Philippines. But later, according to the agreement between the Philippines and the United States, the Philippines became independent according to the law brought in 1934.
