Putin won the 2004 presidential election and became president for two consecutive terms. Putin, who could not become president for the third time due to legal provisions, made his confidant Dmitry Medvedev president in 2008.
After making Medvedev the president, he became the prime minister for four years. Putin, who extended his presidential term to six years, won the 2012, 2018 and 2024 presidential elections. Before being elected for a fifth term last March, Putin has cleared the way for another term in power by amending the law.
Born on October 7, 1952 in St. Petersburg, Russia (the then Soviet Union), Putin joined the Russian intelligence service KGB (National Security Committee) in 1975. Putin, who became deputy mayor of St. Petersburg in 1984, then became deputy chief administrator in the presidential office. Appointed Prime Minister by Russian President Boris Yeltsin in 1999, Putin became Acting President upon his resignation.
