Australia's Harry Sauter missed the first penalty of the game. Similarly, Australia had to accept defeat after Lucas Harrington's fourth penalty hit the post. All four players from Egypt, including captain Mohamed Salah, scored.
The match was undecided after the scheduled 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time. Imam Ashour scored in the 13th minute to give Egypt the lead. He headed in a cross from Karim Hafez.
Australia equalized in the 10th minute after the break. Egypt's Mohamed Hani headed a free kick into his own post to level the game at 1-1.
Both teams were looking for their first win in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
