Sanju Samson's unbeaten 97 helped India beat West Indies by five wickets on Sunday to reach the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup. The hosts became the fourth team to reach the last four with a victory in the decisive match of Super Eight Group One.

Samson hit 12 fours and 4 sixes in a 50-ball innings against the two-time champions West Indies in front of a home crowd of 67,000 at Eden Gardens to help India reach the target of 196 with 199 runs in front of 4 balls. Samson hit a six and a four off Romario Shepherd's ball in the final over with 7 needed to win.

West Indies are out after this defeat. Defending champions India will face England in the semi-final in Mumbai on Thursday. England had won all three of their Super Eight Group Two matches. The other semi-final will be between South Africa and New Zealand in Kolkata on Wednesday. The final will be played in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

After India won the toss, West Indies, who were invited to bat, made a big score by adding 70 runs in the last 5 overs. Chasing the target, India lost 2 wickets early. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan were both out for 10 runs each.

When India were 41-2, Samson shared a 58-run partnership with captain Suryakumar Yadav (18) for the third wicket. Tilak Verma scored 27 runs off 15 balls and joined Samson to take India's score to 141-4 in 15 overs. Hardik Pandya added 17 runs when India still needed 55 runs.

Earlier, Jason Holder and Rovman Powell shared an unbeaten 76-run partnership for the fifth wicket. West Indies made a surprising decision by sending T20 captain Shai Hope and Test captain Roston Chase to open. The two added 68 runs for the first wicket in 9 overs. Hope was dismissed for 32 off 33 balls, hitting 3 fours and 1 six. Chase scored 40 off 25 balls, hitting 5 fours and 1 six.

Simran Hetmyer scored 27 off 12 balls, hitting 1 four and 2 sixes. India dominated the game after he was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah. But Powell hit 34 off 19 balls, hitting 2 sixes and 3 fours, and Holder hit 37 off 22 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 2 fours, to put West Indies on a good score. But India dropped 3 catches in the process.
