Pakistan crashed out of the Super Eights of the Twenty20 World Cup despite a 5-run win over Sri Lanka. Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals after failing to produce a favorable result in Kandy on Saturday.

Pakistan would have reached the semi-finals if they had defeated Sri Lanka by at least 65 runs. However, Pakistan failed to surpass New Zealand in run rate after winning by a narrow margin. Although Pakistan and New Zealand had the same 3 points, New Zealand reached the semi-finals with a better run rate.

England had already reached the semi-finals by winning all three matches in Group 2 of the Super Eights. Co-hosts Sri Lanka lost in all three matches. But Dasun Sanka scored an unbeaten 76 runs off 31 balls to take Sri Lanka close to the target of 213. He hit 1 four and 3 sixes in the first four balls of Shaheen Shah Afridi, leaving Sri Lanka needing 6 runs to win in the last two balls.

But Afridi kept the last two balls offside to ensure Pakistan's victory, but they could not advance to the next stage. Sri Lanka scored only 207 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Pakistan had to stop Sri Lanka below 147 runs to reach the semi-finals.

Sanka hit 2 fours and 8 sixes in his innings. Pawan Ratnayake scored 58 runs in 37 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes. Kamil Misara was out for 26 and Charith Asalanka for 25 runs. Abrar Ahmed took 3 wickets for Pakistan. He spent 23 runs in 4 overs. Afridi, Naseem Shah and Mohammad Nawaz took 1 wicket each.

Earlier, Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan became the first player to score two centuries in the Twenty20 World Cup. He teamed up with Fakhar Zaman to take Pakistan to a score of 212-8 after losing the toss and putting them in to bat. This is also Pakistan's highest score in the Twenty20 World Cup. In the 2016 World Cup, they had previously scored 201-5 against Bangladesh in Kolkata.

They shared a partnership of 176 runs for the first wicket. This partnership was broken when Zaman was dismissed in the fifth ball of the 16th over. Zaman scored 84 runs in 42 balls. He hit 9 fours and 4 sixes. Farhan scored 100 runs in 60 balls. He hit 5 sixes and 9 fours. After completing his century in 59 balls, he was dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka in the last over. Madushanka took 3 wickets for 33 runs.

Farhan has scored 383 runs in this World Cup. He has surpassed India's Virat Kohli's record of scoring the most runs in a single World Cup. Kohli had scored 319 runs in the 2014 World Cup.
