Kathmandu Gurkhaz defeated Karnali Yaks by 3 wickets in Nepal Premier League (NPL) cricket on Wednesday after Karan KC played a captaincy innings and Sumit Maharjan played a clean innings. Gurkhaz completed the target of 150 runs with 3 balls to spare.
At the time when the score was equal, Sumit hit a boundary and won Gurkhaz. He played 37 balls and scored 40 unbeaten runs by hitting 3 fours and 1 six. Karan played 10 balls and hit 2 fours and a six and scored 28 runs. When the team needed 7 runs to win, he reached the last ball of the 19th over to take a catch on the boundary line.
149 runs were scored by losing 5 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs played at the Trivi Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Gurkhaz opener Shankar Rana was run out after scoring 6 runs in 7 balls. Earlier, after Shikhar Dhawan scored 72 runs off 51 balls, Karnali played the scheduled 20 overs and scored 149 runs losing 5 wickets. He hit 4 fours and 5 sixes. Dhawan completed his half-century in 42 balls by hitting consecutive balls from Karan for a six and a four in the 18th over. Dhawan hit Nathan Souter for consecutive sixes in the first two balls of the 19th over.
Along with Dhawan, Maksud remained unbeaten by hitting 1 four off 11 balls and scoring 14 runs. These two shared an unbeaten partnership of 65 runs off 33 balls for the sixth wicket. Karan got Dev Khanal out LBW for a wicket in the first over of the match. Chadwick Walton hit 5 boundaries and scored 21 runs off 15 balls. He was brought back to the pavilion by Karan taking a fine catch on the ball of Jehrard Erasmus.
Babar Hayat scored 13 runs with 1 six off 18 balls and was bowled by Dipesh Kandel. Gulshan, who hit a boundary on the first ball he faced, scored 12 runs in 19 balls and was stumped by Erasmus. Arjun Gharti was bowled by Nathan Souter for 4 runs. From Gurkhaz, Erasmus took 2 wickets after spending 29 runs in 4 overs, Karan took 19 wickets in 3 overs, Dipesh took 7 wickets in 1 over and Souter took 1 wicket each after spending 32 runs in 4 overs.
This is Gurkhaj's first victory. The team was defeated by 5 wickets against Chitwan Rhinos in the first match. This is Karnali's second consecutive defeat. The team lost to Janakpur Boltsag by 8 wickets in their first match.
