Politician and former Education Minister Sumana Shrestha said that elected MPs should become people's representatives.

Speaking at the final session of the Kantipur Conclave on 'Policy, Leaders and Leadership', she said, 'If you only accept the whip of the party and the party president, you will become an MP. The people should not be lied to. After winning the election, the system of whipping the party and top leaders should be changed,' she said.

'There is no system of whipping the party. MPs should be allowed to use their discretion. They should be people's representatives. They should not be party representatives,' Shrestha said.

She also said that the narrative that there is no politics without a party should be changed. 'I have been challenging from the House. There has been no innovation in Nepali politics. The new and the old apply to all parties. After entering politics, shouldn't you leave?' she asked.

She commented that it was wrong to do politics for life in Nepal. 'Why did top leaders have to sit in the front row in Parliament? How much time are proportional representatives and women parliamentarians given to speak in parliament?,’ she asked.

She said that politics should be seen as a responsibility and work rather than a position. ‘Election manifestos are like Buddha’s palaces. They are not applicable. Politics should be seen as a job of responsibility apart from position,’ she said.
