Former Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's 34-year parliamentary journey has come to an end after he decided not to run for the upcoming House of Representatives elections. Deuba had been elected from Dadeldhura in all parliamentary elections since 2001.

He was recommended as the sole candidate from Dadeldhura Congress this time too. However, in the meantime, the special general convention held in Kathmandu removed Deuba from the post of president and gave the leadership of the Congress to Gagan Thapa, due to which he withdrew from the candidacy.

Although the Deuba faction filed a petition with the Election Commission calling the special general convention illegal, the commission recognized the Thapa-led Congress. After that, the Deuba faction filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court.

Deuba's political activism spans more than 60 years. Deuba, who started politics in 022 BS, became a founding member of the Nepal Students' Union in 027 BS. He became the first president of the Nepal Students' Union in 028 BS. Deuba, who rose to parliamentary politics after the restoration of multi-party democracy, remained decisive in every political ups and downs thereafter. Sometimes he led the opposition and sometimes the government.

Deuba has been Prime Minister five times and MP seven times since 2001. His parliamentary journey revolved around struggle, compromise and power. In the 2001 election, Deuba, who was a candidate for the first time, won in Dadeldhura by getting 70.5 percent of the votes cast. At that time, he defeated his nearest competitor, Govinda Prasad Kalauni of UML.

He led the election of Sudurpaschim Congress in 2001. In that election, the Congress won 18 out of 19 seats in Sudurpaschim. After being elected for the first time, he became the Home Minister. He has not had to turn back in any election since then. Instead, he has remained an 'evergreen player' of the ruling party.

Deuba defeated his nearest competitor, Khemraj Bhatta (Mayalu) of Nepal Janawadi Morcha, in the 2002 mid-term elections. He got 61.75 percent of the votes cast. Then Deuba became Prime Minister for the first time on 26 Bhadra 052. He remained Prime Minister for one and a half years. In the 056 election, he defeated his closest competitor Bageshwori Dutta Chataut of UML by securing 64.68 percent of the votes. Then, he became Prime Minister for the second time from 7 Shrawan 058 for 14 months. On 21 Jestha 061, he became Prime Minister for the third time for eight months.

The election that Deuba won by a narrow margin was in 064. In the first Constituent Assembly election held in 064, Deuba's closest competitor was Khagraj Bhatta of the Maoists. In that election, Deuba could only maintain a margin of 1,368 votes with Bhatta. In the 064 election, he also contested from Kanchanpur-4. He won there too. In the second Constituent Assembly election held in 070, Deuba defeated his closest competitor Khagraj Bhattarai of the UCPN-M in Dadeldhura by securing 50.53 percent of the votes. He also won the election from Kailali-6 in the same election.

Even when there was a left alliance in 2074, no one could push Deuba. When Deuba was elected with 28,044 votes, Khagaraj Bhatta of the Maoists, who had 21,115 votes, was defeated by him for the third time. Deuba, who became Prime Minister for the fourth time in Jestha 2074, set a record of becoming Prime Minister five times by becoming Prime Minister again in Asad 2078. Deuba won the 2079 election by getting almost double the votes than his closest rival, independent candidate Sagar Dhakal. While Dhakal got 13,042 votes, Deuba got 25,534 votes.

Deuba remained at the forefront, navigating almost all political twists and turns, from the struggle against the Panchayat system to the establishment of multi-party democracy, armed conflict, the end of the monarchy and the practice of a federal republic. But after the Gen-G movement, he has been pushed to the sidelines by the demand for leadership transfer and generational change in political parties. Congress leaders and workers from the Far West, who support Deuba, seem disappointed as his parliamentary tour is halted. Meghraj Khadka, General Secretary of the Congress Sudurpaschim Province Working Committee, says that the halt in Deuba's parliamentary tour will also temporarily halt the access and respect that the entire Sudurpaschim region will receive in the coming days. "I don't see another leader in the Far West who can replace Sher Bahadur Deuba right now," Khadka said.
