What you should know
Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has said that he will defend liberal democracy by facing the challenge of populism.
Presenting a contemporary-political proposal at the closing session of the Congress Special General Convention, he said that democracy and the constitution will be protected by being aware of populist and anarchist tendencies.
‘After the wave of populism and anarchism seen worldwide, trends and characters in Nepal are also seen to be increasingly devaluing the democratic system, liberalism, pluralistic principles and values,’ he said in the report. ‘Due to such characters and trends, the illusion is being created that democratic systems and institutions are not made by sacrificing, but by miracles. It is the historical responsibility of the Congress to stop such trends and promote and promote liberal and inclusive democracy and pluralistic society.’
He said that democracy is not a miracle but a system, method and process. ‘In a democratic system, democratic institutions must be capable and strong. The government and political parties must be accountable to the people. If democratic institutions are functional and effective, the system will develop, and only if the system is developed, the system will develop,’ Thapa added. ‘If democratic institutions are functional and effective, the system will develop. Only if the system develops, the system will develop.’
He pointed out that democracy is not only a system of governance but also a way of life. He wrote in the proposal presented at the special general convention, ‘Democracy is system-oriented and institutional-oriented. Democracy is law-based and process-oriented.’
