Raghu Pant has filed his candidacy as an independent candidate after not being included in the panel for the post of Vice President from the UML establishment side. He filed his candidacy as an independent candidate after not being able to file his candidacy for the post of Vice President from the KP Sharma Oli side.

However, Pant has claimed that he has the support of representatives from both Ishwor Pokharel and the Oli group. Regarding his candidacy, Pant said, 'I have filed my candidacy at the request of friends from both sides. I have the support of friends from both sides.'

Bishnu Poudel, Ram Bahadur Thapa, Guru Baral, Prithvi Subba Gurung and Pradeep Gyawali have been nominated as vice-chairmen from the Oli side.

Pant was previously elected as a standing committee member in the 10th general convention. In fact, he was seen as close to Oli recently. After Vidya Bhattarai resigned, Oli made Pant the education minister.

During the struggle within the UML, he was close to the then general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal for a long time. Nepal had also made him the chief political advisor when he was the prime minister. After the UML-Maoist united to form the CPN, he was in the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-Madhav Kumar Nepal group. But after the Supreme Court ordered the two parties to return to their original form, he sided with Oli.

He became the Minister of Labor in 2061 BS. Pant, who had editing experience in newspapers including Drishti, Budhbar, and Sajjanta Weekly, also became the press advisor to the first communist Prime Minister Manmohan Adhikari in 2052 BS.
