Nepal is redefining relations with India: Mrigendra Karki

Tribhuvan University Center for Nepal and Asian Studies (CINAS) Executive Director Mrigendra Karki has said that the deep ties with India still exist.

Speaking at the third session of the second day of the Kantipur Conclave, ‘Nepal in the Power Struggle’, he said that Nepal is no longer in a position to look in only one direction.

‘The Prime Ministers, civic leaders, and diplomats of both countries have talked about Nepal-India relations in detail. In fact, our relations are eternal, old. Now Nepal is redefining its relations with India,’ he said, ‘China has recently moved forward in a different way. Connectivity and infrastructure development have increased. This has not only presented opportunities for Nepal, but also presented strategic questions.’

The US, he said, is still presenting itself by prioritizing the issues of democracy, human rights, and freedom. Therefore, Nepal is now in a position to balance the economic development opportunities coming from China on the one hand, and engage with the values of democracy and freedom emphasized by the US on the other.’

‘The main question is how Nepal manages this situation? How does it protect its independence, sovereignty, and identity while engaging with world powers? "That's what it's all about," he said.
