Gen-G activist Majid Ansari has said that the federal democratic republic cannot be protected by leaders who do not listen to and count the voices of the common man.
Speaking at the session on ‘New Voices of the Republic’ on the second day of the Kantipur Conclave, he pointed out that there is a tendency among leaders of new and old political parties not to listen to the voices of the common people and not to count them. ‘Just by going to Mukulung and Pathibhara, the people there will not be respected.’ If the common people are not counted, democracy will not survive,’ he said.
Ansari said that ‘New Values’ are needed rather than ‘New People’. ‘Democracy should not be seen only in terms of numbers.’ We should also look at how the government has listened to the voices of the majority and protected the voices of the minority,’ he emphasized.
He pointed out that despite the UML general convention, the Congress special general convention and the Maoists uniting to form the Nepal Communist Party, the work of strengthening democracy has not been done. ‘The federal democratic republic should be strengthened.’ But laws were made by curtailing the powers granted by the constitution formed by the Constituent Assembly,’ he said. He alleged that an attempt was made to revert to backwardness when the bills related to information technology, police and personnel were brought in. ‘An attempt was made to make laws in the republic that are more backward than those of Mahendra’s time,’ Ansari said.
