As international bandwidth consumption started to rise, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have sought clear guidance from the regulator Nepal Telecommunication Authority on how and from where to manage the necessary capacity to ensure service continuity.
The Association of Nepal Internet Service Providers (ISPAN) has sent a letter to the authority on Monday and requested to give guidelines on this matter soon. In the letter signed by ISPAN President Sudhir Parajuli, it is mentioned that network congestion (abnormal pressure in the network) has arisen due to the abnormal increase in bandwidth. Due to this, it is said that the problem of bandwidth capacity narrowing (choking) has appeared.
According to the association, this will seriously affect the internet quality and consumers will experience problems in latency, packet loss, real-time applications, banking and business transactions. In addition, it has been asked to give guidance on how and by which process the financial and technical damages to be borne by the service provider can be provided. It is said in the
letter, 'Due to excessive traffic, our technical resources and network capacity are under pressure. If the current situation remains like this, there is a high risk of serious impact on the system, due to which there is a risk of widespread disruption of internet services.'
