The federation has strongly demanded the related parties to immediately remove the control over social media while respecting the citizens' right to information and freedom of press and expression.
The Federation of Nepalese Journalists has expressed opposition to the government's decision to close social media. On Thursday, after the government decided to close social networks including Facebook, the federation issued a statement saying that people's freedom of expression should not be curtailed.
Federation disagreed saying that this decision of the government will shrink the freedom of press and expression. In a press release signed by the General Secretary of the Federation, Ram Prasad Dahal, it is said, "The Federation is surprised that the government is unable to pay attention to the fact that the closure of social networks without any alternative will not only reduce the freedom of press and expression, but also affect the right to information of the citizens."
Federation has made it clear that it is in favor of social media regulation . However, it has taken a stand that it will never accept any measure of media control that affects the freedom of press and expression. The Federation has strongly demanded the related parties to immediately remove the control over social media while respecting the right of citizens to information and the freedom of press and expression.
