Republican candidate Donald Trump won the presidential election in the United States on Tuesday. Trump was elected as the 47th President of the United States by defeating the Democratic Party's candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump won with more than 270 electoral votes.

In order to be elected as the President of the United States, at least 270 electoral votes out of the total 538 votes must be obtained. Trump has received 292 votes in four states with results yet to be announced.

Democratic Party candidate for Vice President Kamala Harris received 224 electoral votes. Trump has already won the seven swing states considered decisive: Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada. 535 electoral votes have been determined based on population in the 50 states of America and 3 electoral votes in the federal capital District of Columbia. 

Most of the 50 states have traditionally had one party win presidential elections. States favored by the Democratic party candidate are known as 'blue' states and states held by the Republican candidate are known as 'red' states. States where any of the two candidates can win are called 'swing states'. Trump's comeback is one of those rare events in America. Grover Cleveland, previously president from 1885 to 1889, was elected to a second term four years later in 1893.

Trump was president from 2016 to 2020. In 2016, he unexpectedly defeated Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton. He lost to Joe Biden in 2020. Coincidentally, both the candidates he defeated were women. Trump rejected the election results when he lost to Biden. At that time, due to Trump inciting activists, riots broke out in the Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021. It badly tarnished his image in American politics. After that move, Trump's Democratic as well as some Republican leaders also strongly condemned. 

In the four years since then, he faced various troubles. Cases were filed against him in federal and various state courts. Convicted in some cases. But he managed to become the presidential candidate on behalf of the Republican Party while maintaining his dominance within the party. After that, Trump has finally reached the highest position of American politics. 

Why voters preferred? 

After polls showed voters particularly trusting Trump on immigration and the economy, his campaign prioritized these issues. But Vice President Harris stepped in after Democratic Party candidate President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Trump's campaign was thrown into some confusion after that. But within a few days, he moved forward in the guise of his electoral agenda and voters who were against the government. 

According to various exit polls, Trump managed to attract young, Hispanic and black voters traditionally considered Democratic strongholds. For that, he raised the issue of economy, war and immigration with great priority. 

Rising spending on food and housing appeared more important to voters than economic growth and a drop in the unemployment rate. Inflation in the U.S. reached its highest level in 40 years in 2022. But even though inflation has recently fallen, Trump has used it as an electoral weapon against the Democrats. 

One of the 20 key promises on his campaign website is to "end inflation and make America affordable again." He said he would reduce housing costs by deporting undocumented immigrants and barring illegal immigrants from entering the U.S., starting a home building program on federal land. He said he would expand US energy production and open up areas like the Arctic desert to oil exploration and lower energy costs. 

Trump has also put forward a plan to cut taxes. He has proposed 10 to 20 percent tariffs on most foreign goods and 60 percent on Chinese imports. He claims that this will promote indigenous producers and stop outsourcing. This risks increasing the price for consumers. 

Trump strongly raised the issue of immigration during the 2016 presidential election. His slogan was to build a wall on the border with Mexico. Trump has promised to build a wall and close the border. His running mate, JD Vance, has said he will "deport" one million people. Trump has proposed a policy that would make children of undocumented residents eligible for US citizenship.

Trump has promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours after talks with Russia. He says that ending the Russia-Ukraine war is the best step for America. Trump has also said that he will stop financial aid for Ukraine. Trump, who has presented himself as a staunch supporter of Israel, has condemned pro-Palestinian protests at American universities and colleges. But he has also sometimes criticized the way Israel conducts the war. 

This is the first presidential election in the US since the Supreme Court struck down the constitutional right to abortion in 2022. The three judges who made the decision were appointed by Trump when he was president. But Trump has said that states are free to enact separate abortion laws. Even in the presidential debate, he said that he would not sign the law banning abortion nationwide. Because of this, competitor Harris has been unable to garner the expected support of voters who are in favor of abortion rights. 

Trump has promised not to cut Medicare, which provides federal health insurance for the elderly. While in office, he unsuccessfully tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which was introduced by former President Barack Obama and tied millions of people to insurance. Similarly, Trump has promised to protect the environment and limit carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles and to bring policies to help the American car industry.

Trump was born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, New York, USA. His father was a real estate businessman and his mother Mary McLeod was a social worker. At the age of thirteen, Trump entered the New York Military School and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics in 1968. 

In the 1960s and 70s, Trump ran real estate businesses in states including New York, Ohio, and Virginia. Trump, who has been known as America's richest man since 1971, has taken over the family business since 1973. After opening the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York in 1980, he became famous in America. In the 1980s, he 

had invested heavily in the casino business in Atlantic City. After taking over the business house, he ran all his businesses as 'Trump Organization'. In the 1990s, some of Trump's companies went bankrupt when the US economy went into recession. Trump, who did not drink alcohol throughout his life, even produced vodka through his own company in 2006.

Trump, who registered as a member of the Republican Party in Manhattan in 1987, joined the Reform Party in 1999. Trump joined the Democratic Party in 2001 and returned to the Republican Party in 2009. He was a presidential candidate for the first time in 2000 but was defeated. 

Trump is America's richest president. Forbes magazine ranked him 324th in the list of the world's richest people in 2016. At that time, his net worth was 3.7 billion US dollars. According to Forbes, his current wealth is about 6 billion 60 million US dollars. 

Trump married Czech model Ivana Zelnychkova Winklemeier in 1977. They had three children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric, before the relationship ended in 1992. Trump then married American actress Marla Maples. They had a child together in 1993. After divorcing Mapless in 1999, Trump married Melania Knaus, a Slovenian model, in 2005. They have one child.

Trump, the 47th president-elect of the United States, has responded to the "resounding victory of the American people". "It's allowed us to make America great again," he said, addressing supporters in Palm Beach, Florida. 

Trump has claimed that his upcoming tenure will be a "golden era" for America. "America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate," he said, "I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected as your 47th president and 45th president." Trump was asked by supporters to speak about billionaire Elon Musk. He then described Musk as the "new star" of the Republican Party. Trump also called Musk a "wonderful person."

Musk's Starlink satellite service helped save many lives during Hurricane Helen, which devastated the southeastern United States last October, Trump said. Trump also said that choosing JD Vance as his vice presidential nominee was a very good move. During the speech, he also called his wife Melania Trump on the stage and thanked her by calling her 'the first lady'. 

Republican majority in the Senate 

The Republican Party has won the majority in the upper house of the United States, the Senate. According to CNN, the Republican Party is certain to win at least 52 seats in the 100-seat Senate. The Democratic Party has lost its majority in the Senate since 2021, with Republican candidates defeating incumbent Democratic senators in Ohio and West Virginia.
