Congress leaders have questioned Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal as to why Kantipur Media Group president Kailash Sirohia was arrested in a biased manner.
In a meeting called by Prime Minister Dahal in Baluwatar on Friday to settle the jurisdiction of the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee, Congress General Minister Gagan Thapa and leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that the government's move to arrest Kantipur President Sirohia was malicious.
"Chairman Sirohia has been arrested on the basis of Kantipur publishing news about co-operative fraud," Congress leader Sitaula said, "Who is the person who filed a police report?" Which party workers? How did the police reach the court, how were they arrested in Kathmandu? We have told the Prime Minister that it is obvious to see how it was kept there. The Congress leaders said that Prime Minister Dahal defended the government by saying that it was not the government but the court process.
They told that the Prime Minister said that it is sad that it is publicized in the national and international arena that this is purely a court process and that the freedom of the press has been suppressed regarding the issue of citizenship.
Congress leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister's answer and questioned who has done the work of activating the court. The Prime Minister says that it is a court process. But, didn't the government go to the court to get an arrest warrant? How can the court issue an arrest warrant without asking the police on behalf of the government? Does the court issue an arrest warrant on its own accord? On behalf of the government, the court issued the warrant of arrest on behalf of the police, said General Minister Thapa and Sitaula, "The government has done the work of activating the court." How can the prime minister ignore the court process?' Sitaula said that even though the state has the right to investigate any matter, the time and circumstances in which the arrest warrant has been issued against Kantipur President Sirohia, it cannot be said that it was done with the right intention.
Chief Minister Thapa claimed that the government is trying to silence the press by arresting Kantipur President Sirohia. He argued that Sirohia was arrested on the basis of the fact that General Minister Thapa was involved in co-operative fraud.
In a meeting attended by UML President KP Sharma Oli, Chief Whip of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Ramesh Akhtar, said that since the statement made by the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ravi Lamichhane in the Parliament last Sunday was objectionable, the Congress would demand an answer from the Prime Minister. "Congress has taken seriously Lamichhane's statement aimed at its leader that those who sell state information to foreigners are in Parliament," he said. We are going to demand an answer as to what the Prime Minister has to say about the way the current Home Minister has made objectionable and violent expressions.'
