Laligurans Municipality in Tehrathum has decided to declare a public holiday on Jestha 15 to control the monkey menace. The holiday is being given to conduct a collective campaign to drive away monkeys to solve the problem after monkeys started destroying the crops and vegetables that farmers had produced with great difficulty.
The notice signed by Mayor Arjun Mabohang states that farmers have suffered huge financial losses due to monkeys, have had to stay in their fields day and night, and even school-age children have been forced to drop out of school to protect their crops.
'Although the monkey problem seems common on the surface, it has seriously affected the farming community,' the notice says, 'Farmers have to stay in their fields all night to protect their agricultural produce. This has affected not only the financial condition of the farmers, but also the education of the children and the daily lives of their families.'
The municipality has decided to organize a program to collectively drive away monkeys and send them outside the municipality's borders on Jestha 15 and 16. For this, farmers, public representatives, employees and the general public have been publicly called to participate in the monkey-driving campaign by attending the time and place specified by the ward.
Mayor Mabohang said that although the problem of monkeys seems common, it has seriously affected the livelihood of rural farmers. 'Monkeys are destroying the corn, potatoes, millet, fruits and vegetables planted by farmers,' he said. 'Since a large number of manpower is required to drive away monkeys, we have closed all services except essential ones and declared a public holiday.'
The municipality has also made arrangements to build temporary structures for monkey control and deploy watchmen. Currently, monkey pens have been placed in Megha Puchhar of ward number 8, Nageshwori, the confluence of ward numbers 6 and 8, and Singhathap Puchhar of ward number 5, according to the municipality. Currently, the municipality has mobilized four pens to drive away monkeys in various places.
Mabohang recalled that many people made fun of him when he arranged a monkey farm for monkey control at the beginning of his term, but now the problem is becoming serious. 'At that time, many considered it a normal issue, but now farmers have reached a point where they can't help but laugh,' he said.
He also demanded that the central government consider the monkey problem a national problem and come up with a long-term solution program. 'It is not possible to solve this problem at the local level alone,' he said. 'The federal government needs to come up with concrete policies and programs to protect agricultural production and provide relief to farmers.'
The municipality has also taken forward a plan to plant fruit trees, including mangosteen and pear, in the monkey-affected community forest area. The municipality says that this plan was brought with the aim of providing food to monkeys in the forest area and reducing their entry into settlements and farmlands.
The monkey problem has become acute in the hilly districts in recent years. There are increasing complaints that farmers are being forced to abandon farming, especially when monkeys cause damage to corn, potatoes, fruits and vegetables. The issue has now gained attention after the Laligurans Municipality decided to collectively drive away monkeys during a public holiday.
