Finance Ministry Secretary Madhukumar Marasini has said that Nepal cannot become economically self-sufficient by importing 3-4 trillion every year. He pointed out that as a small country that embraces the policy of open economy, there are many ripples outside of Nepal.

Speaking in the first session of the 'Economic Summit 2024' organized by Kantipur Media Group on Sunday, Finance Secretary Marasini reiterated that we had to be influenced by international events as local production was not enough. "After the covid epidemic, the import in Nepal increased rapidly," he said, "due to the disruption of the supply chain due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the price of petroleum products increased worldwide. We spent huge dollars on its import . It brought waves in our economy.'

Finance Secretary Marasini thinks that there should be a debate on how to increase our economic resilience to be less affected by such external influences or to counteract them.  He also said that initiatives should be started from the grassroots level to make Nepal self-sufficient. "My request to the private sector is that since you are the engine of growth, connect this engine of growth to the rural areas as well," he said.
