The traditional names of Butwal, situated in Chure foothills north of Rupandehi, are Khasyauli, Batauli, Butaul. By whatever name it is known, there is no doubt that Butwal has been a center of settlement and trade since history. Various facts show that Butwal has been the capital of the republic and a trading port for hundreds of years. An example is Jitgarhi Fort. There is a history of Nepal defeating the British in that fort two hundred years ago. Sen dynasty kings used it as a winter capital. Batauli is also associated with trade in salt and cloth.

After the expansion of Mahendra and Siddharth highways from the city center, Butwal got its modern form a hundred years ago. Butwal is a city full of diversity. 500 years ago, Manimukund Sen, king of Palpa state, brought Kashoudhan from Kashmir here for trade. The Newar community also came here in the same Serofero. Thakalis came here from Mustang in 1995 with the expansion of the road. At that time, Butwal was famous for trade exchange. The ghee brought from the hills for sale was processed and sent to countries including India. At that time, there was a place to sell Lhasa's salt, gold, mountain herbs, ghee, and oil.

in this context In 2016, Butwal Khasyoli Municipality was established. After the dissolution of the multi-party system, it was made the Butwal Khasyuli Nagar Panchayat. After restoration of multi-party system, it was named as Butwal municipality. Butwal, which was upgraded to a sub-metropolitan city on 16 November 2071, is a livable city.
