After the main opposition parties decided to remove him as Prime Minister through a vote of no confidence, Adhikari responded to questions raised in Parliament from his bed in a teaching hospital via video recording.
What you should know
Nepal's first communist Prime Minister Manmohan Adhikari was injured in a helicopter crash on the banks of the Rapti River in the last week of Shrawan 2052. He was treated at the Maharajgunj Teaching Hospital.
While he was undergoing treatment, Adhikari's recommendation to dissolve the House of Representatives and hold mid-term elections in 2052 B.E. was declared unconstitutional by the court in 2052 B.E. .
It was expected that Adhikari would resign from the post of Prime Minister as the Supreme Court had overturned his recommendation and the UML was in a minority in Parliament. However, he informed the House that he would not resign from the teaching hospital and would 'face Parliament'. After the parties, including the main opposition, decided to remove him from the post of Prime Minister through a no-confidence motion, Adhikari responded to questions raised in Parliament from his bed in the teaching hospital through a video recording.
It was estimated that the Prime Minister, who is facing a no-confidence motion, answered questions raised by MPs from the hospital, possibly setting a new record. Some even called this scene tragic. UML accused the opposition parties including the Congress of forgetting humanity for the sake of power by not being able to wait a few days when he was sick.
After the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Adhikari was passed, the King appointed Congress parliamentary party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba as the Prime Minister on Bhadra 26, 2052. Adhikari, who had been Prime Minister for nine months, was receiving treatment in the hospital. Three months after the accident, Adhikari appeared in the House of Representatives for the first time on Mangsir 1, 2052. ![[Archive] That speech given by Manmohan Singh while standing on a stick...](https://assets-cdn.ekantipur.com/uploads/source/news/kantipur/2026/miscellaneous/page1kpr-2-0212026090456-1000x0.jpg)
Adhikari, who had announced mid-term elections as Prime Minister, appeared in Parliament carrying a cane. He informed Speaker Ramchandra Poudel that he wanted to speak in Parliament on the same day. Speaker Poudel had arranged for Adhikari to speak as per the parliamentary tradition of giving priority to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers and leaders of the main opposition parties, except in special circumstances. Adhikari, who entered the parliament carrying a cane, spoke for 20 minutes. Ailing Manmohan Singh, standing on the rostrum without a cane, said, ‘Parliament is the nourishing element of democracy that solves all the problems of the nation.’ He had said that he had some bitter and sweet things to say and had also claimed that he had shown some new things and done people-oriented work during his time in the government. He had expressed dissatisfaction that the joint government had portrayed the work done by the UML in a negative light.
Assuring the government of his constructive support if it did a good job, he had felt that he had not received a fair approach from the government. Adhikari, claiming that he had improved relations with India when he was the Prime Minister, had said that everyone in the parliament should move forward as one. He had also said that if the entire parliament was united, the agreement with India could be implemented. His suggestion was that the government should bring new bills to show the people that it is doing good. Former Prime Minister Adhikari, speaking at the UML general assembly in Kathmandu Municipality-16 on the same day, had said that the responsibility of leading the coalition government would fall in four to six months and fall on the shoulders of the UML again. Manmohan, who spoke with a stick in the assembly, claimed that the UML's goal was Mount Everest. He had estimated that the UML would win up to 120 seats if the mid-term elections were held, saying that the government had to leave due to the deteriorating environment. At that time, the total number of MPs in the House of Representatives was 205. He also claimed that the opposition parties had gone to court fearing that the UML would gain a majority. Adhikari had expressed dissatisfaction that the court had ignored old precedents and given its decision. Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had accused the Supreme Court of ignoring precedents with the intention of invalidating his own recommendation for the mid-term elections in 2051. He also expressed the pain of losing power due to the court. He said that the joint government had cut the budget allocated by the UML.
He had expressed the view that the work done under his leadership in the nine months, the activities of the joint government and the decisions made by the Supreme Court should be taken to the villages as a campaign. Kantipur Daily published a news report on the first speech of Manmohan Singh in Parliament and party meetings after losing the post of Prime Minister in a state of illness on 2052 Mangsir 2 under the headlines ‘It is not time for the government to comment’, ‘We are committed to the goal of climbing Everest’.
