Gurung Nakhkhu, who was serving a prison sentence for shooting journalist Padam Thakurathi, escaped by climbing over the prison wall. The same night he was recaptured with a broken leg.
What you should know
31 years ago today, Vikas Gurung, who was known as a 'notorious prisoner', was spending his life in prison in Nakhkhu. During the Panchayat period, he tried to kill journalist Padam Thakurathi by shooting her in the head while she was sleeping at home.
During the panchayat period, Gurung was serving a prison sentence on the charge of trying to kill Thakurathi on August 20, 2043 on the instructions of the palace brothers.
2051 At 11.40 on the night of July 22, Vikas was seen trying to escape by crossing the 15-feet high wall of Nakkhu Jail. The guards assigned to guard the prison tried to shoot at Vikas but the gun did not fire. Why not a gun? The guard was surprised and checked the gun but there was no bullet in the gun. The guard hastily started loading bullets . Vikas ran away from there when he reached the prison wall after loading bullets.
Vikas escaped from the north-east bastion of Nakkhu Jail . The sight of the prison guard's gun being empty also created suspicion at that time.
It was raining heavily at night . The prison administration claimed that Vikas climbed over the wall with the help of a stick tied to his body with a cloth. According to the then jailer Sahdev Parajuli, it was assumed that the electric current of the wire on the wall was stopped by tying a thick cloth to the hand. Even before that, Vikas ran away from Bhotebhal on June 10, 2048, when he was taken to Veer Hospital for treatment. At that time, he was arrested from Lalitpur on June 2, 2051.
Srikant Regmi, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs, informed that when the security personnel arrived after hearing the sound of Vikas jumping out of the wall, he saw the cloth and the hook used by him . He said that it was only then that the prison administration came to know that Vikas had escaped. After escaping, Vikas was checked in the room where his friends were. They were fast asleep even then. Security surveillance was increased at all checkpoints in the valley after receiving information that Vikas had absconded. ![[Archive] Vikas who escaped from Nakhkhu re-arrested with a broken leg](https://assets-cdn.kantipurdaily.com/uploads/source/news/kantipur/2025/miscellaneous/2051-4-24-2982025074046-1000x0.jpg)
Not only the Thakurathi case against Vikas - various cases related to murder, theft, robbery and rape were also under consideration in the court . That's why the police called him a notorious criminal. Crimes were also added after Vikas absconded. After he escaped, the indifference of the police was widely criticized.
Vikas, who ran away from the wall, was arrested in an injured state at night. He was taken to Veer Hospital for treatment. He was taken to the teaching hospital Maharajgunj after he could not be treated there. According to the hospital, it was informed that the treatment would take at least three months as the left leg was broken in several places. Because it takes time to connect the bone, it became a situation of long stay in the hospital . He was kept under strict security in cabin number 412 of the teaching hospital.
According to a security source, he stopped the vehicle that came while he was hiding in the Vishnudevi temple, about 500 meters to the north of the prison. Sources said that they were arrested because they did not know that the stopped vehicle belonged to the police because it was night time. Home spokesperson Regmi claimed that Vikas was arrested from the maid's room near the Vishnudevi temple. It was assumed by the prison administration that he broke his leg when he got entangled in a small electric wire while escaping. It was assumed that he could not walk due to a broken leg when he was arrested in a planned escape from the prison.
Before that, Devendra Gurung of Syangja and Uday Nepali of Rambazar Pokhara, who were arrested for involvement in two separate murder cases in Pokhara when Vikas was absconding in 2048, were ordered to be remanded by Kaski District Court on July 23, 2051. Devendra and Uday were arrested on the basis of the statement given to the public prosecutor of Lalitpur after Vikas escaped and was arrested for the first time. Even when Vikas was on the run, he was investigated for his involvement in theft, robbery and other incidents.
When Vikas, the accused in the Panchayat's famous scandal, managed to escape from Nakhkhu Jail for the second time, Kantipur published the news prepared by journalist Shyam Ghimire on 24th July 2051 under the title 'Nakhkhu Jail Escaped to Gurung Hospital', including how weak the jail administration was at that time.
The context of the guard protecting the prison with a gun without bullets became interesting at that time . How he managed to cross the wall with the help of Dhod's stick, many did not believe at that time.
