What you should know

On March 12, 1993, 257 people were killed in bomb blasts at 12 locations in Mumbai. 713 people were injured in the incident. The search for the perpetrators of the scandal, which caused a huge financial loss, was intense in India. India was blaming Pakistan for the bombings. Indian intelligence was also keeping an eye on Nepal because the accused and planners of the bombings could enter Nepal.

The Indian government was alleging the involvement of chartered accountant Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, his brother Tiger Memon, Dawood, and Ibrahim in the bombing. India's premier intelligence agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, had also announced a reward of 5 lakh Indian rupees for anyone helping to arrest them.

India has been saying that they have proof that Pakistan is involved in the bomb attack. India's Home Minister Shankarao Chauhan said that the government will take steps to declare Pakistan a terrorist country in international organizations. But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan rejected the allegations made by India and said that 'such allegations are false'.

A Pakistani citizen, Yakul Abdul Razak Memon, who is accused of making a bomb blast, in his statement given to the New Delhi Magistrate on July 21, 2051, said that he was arrested at Kathmandu Airport, a kind of curiosity arose in Nepal. Memon, who came to Nepal from Karachi, Pakistan, said that the Nepalese authorities had handed him over to India.

The issue of the arrest of the accused of such a big bomb case, which India is looking for, was not made public in Nepal. Memon said that he was arrested on July 9, 2051 at Kathmandu Airport. Nepal was reluctant to confirm that he was arrested in Kathmandu. Home Ministry spokesperson Srikant Regmi said that there is no record of Memon being arrested in Nepal. Kantipur received information using sources, after finding two citizenships of Pakistani citizen Memon, additional checks were conducted at Tribhuvan Airport and 19 passports were found during the check. During the search, the passport of Dawood Ibrahim, who is said to be the notorious hero of the bomb scandal, was also found.

Although Nepal denied his arrest, AFP published the news citing Kathmandu government officials. AFP wrote that Nepali officials handed over Memon to India. India accused Mammen of fleeing to Pakistan after detonating the bomb. Indian officials said Memon's arrest was a major breakthrough in the investigation into the bomb case.

India had stated that there was ample evidence of Pakistan's involvement and said that Memon also had an identity card provided by the Pakistani intelligence agency. Memon was handcuffed and produced in the court under tight security. But he said that he was surprised that India had announced that he had caught me only today. He said that he has been traveling to various places under the supervision of Indian security personnel for weeks.

The issue of government handing over the bomb case accused in Nepal to India was being raised. Spokesperson Regmi denied that there is no issue of handing over people who have not been arrested. India also accused the Memon brothers of smuggling RDX explosives into India for the blasts. India had indicted 189 people against the nation in connection with the bomb incident. According to law, if the charges are confirmed, the death penalty is also imposed.

The news prepared by journalists Jivendra Simkhada and Narayan Wagle, including the information about the arrest of Pakistani nationals in connection with the Mumbai bombings in Nepal, was published in India on July 22, 2051 under the title "Bombay bombing accused Memon says, I have been caught in Kathmandu".
