The garment industry established with an investment of 25 crores was expected to provide employment to thousands of people in Jhapa and contribute to the economy.
What you should know
According to government data, in the financial year 2049/50, the export of ready-made garments generated an income of about four billion. In the 1950s, Nepal's first export item was carpets and second was ready-made garments. The main export market for garments was America.
Industrialists also expressed concern that the Nepalese garment industry would collapse if the United States closes the 'quota system' in a discussion on the ready-made garment industry held in Kathmandu in January 2050. Momentous Apparels Garment Industry was established in Bhadrapur, Jhapa at a cost of 25 crores due to the potential of both the business of ready-made garments flourishing and the risk of sinking investment.
The industry in which the National Commercial Bank invested 86.5 million in loans was the largest ready-made garment industry in Nepal. It was estimated that about 1 thousand 5 people will get employment in this industry. The president of the industry was Chandiraj Dhakal. He conducted the industry by involving Indian investors as well.
After the political change of 2046 and the implementation of the open market policy, the garment industry was the first to operate in such a large number of jobs. On the one hand, foreign exchange income is earned by exporting the manufactured goods and on the other hand, employment is created within the country.
Girija Prasad Koirala, the prime minister of the then government, who believed that economic progress can only be achieved through privatization, inaugurated the industry on 18th Baisakh 2051 . Speaking at the inauguration program, Koirala said that the responsibility of industrialists is more intensive than that of politicians for the development of agricultural industries and factories. He said that democracy cannot be strengthened without development.
While the industries operated by the government with the help of various countries collapsed, the products operated by the private sector, such as carpets and garments, were entering the world market . Similarly, Minister of State for Supply and Commerce Surendra Prasad Chaudhary claimed that the government has developed more in the field of industry than during the Panchayat period. It was said that Nepalis will be employed in this factory where the industry makes 1,500 pieces of cloth daily.
The news prepared by Chintamani Dahal and Shankar Kharel from Jhapa was published by Kantipur Dainik on 19th May, 2051 under the title 'Inauguration of the country's largest readymade garment industry by the Prime Minister', focusing on the issues of the establishment of the largest garment factory in Nepal, the jobs created by it and the investment environment.
