[Archive] The ever-so-discussed Northern Passages

What you should know

The political leadership has been discussing from time to time to support the economic and material development of that region by operating all the border crossings connected with China. Now, more than three decades have passed since we have been listening to the speeches of the political leadership such as the opening of all the northern ports connected with China, the increase of trade transactions, and the opening of the door to the economic development of the border region.

In the 1950s, Tatopani, connected to the Araniko highway, was operating as the only trading post. That is why the plan to support the development of the border region by operating more points connected with China from Rasuwa to Olangchugola in Taplejung in the east, from Korala in Mustang to Yari in Humla and Tinkar in Darchula was started 32 years ago . However, among those that were discussed at that time, none of the checkpoints except Rasuwa have been organized. Some checkpoints are not connected to the road network for regular traffic. Citizens are forced to understand the discussion of three decades ago only as a discussion.

The idea that the ports connected with China should be developed as an international trade route is being raised now, the same topic was discussed three decades ago. The stakeholders at that time were interested in increasing trade with China and exporting Nepali products, but it has not been fulfilled yet.

In the 50s from Olangchugola and Yari, the residents of the border area were conducting local business through the goods exchange (warter system) system. Similarly, at that time, local people were trading their products from Kimathanka in Sankhuwasabha, Nangpa La in Solukhumbu, Dhuli in Bajhang.

Tamla Ukyaw, the former royal Nepali consul in Lhasa, said in a conversation with Kantipur in 2051, "The closest port from Lhasa is Olangchugola". Infrastructure should be developed at that point. He said that India is trying to speed up business transactions by developing the Nathulla port in Sikkim, which is connected to China. But the analysts at that time said that Nepal did not give priority to economic transactions with Tibet by developing trade channels connected with China.

Ambika Sanwa, the MP elected to the House of Representatives from Taplejung in the 2048 election, dreamed of building a motorway to Olangchugola. He said at that time, "If the road is opened, the industrial products of the plains and mountains will be able to reach Lhasa". If there is a road, there can be business like Khasa.'

Olangchugola is also the main market for residents of the northern part of Riu Sankhuwasabha, where they do business. Traders used to say, "Even if the entry demand under construction of Arun III is fulfilled, it will be very easy to take the road to the border". With this, it will be possible to take a leap in trade.'

Not only the east, but the center of trade through Yari Pass in Far West Humla was Taklakot in Tibet. Where Tinkar of Darchula and Dhuli Naka of Bajhang also used to come for local business . China had planned to make Taklakot a major commercial center. At that time, a new trade was started with an agreement between China and India.

China has been developing the border crossings connected with Nepal - the residents of Humla, Bajhang and Darchula were also demanding the Nepalese government to do the same. The former Consul General of Lhasa, Ukyaw, said, "If the economic development of the Far West region is to be accelerated, the border crossings should be developed in a new way."

At that time, China had put forward a plan to make transportation to Taklakot Siikang an economic demand. About 32 years ago, the news prepared by journalist Narayan Wagle, focusing on the situation of Nepal's border crossings with China, potential business transactions, local demand, Nepal government's plans and cooperation between China and India for economic development, was published by Kantipur on 17th Baisakh 2051 under the title 'Need for a new approach in Nepal-Tibet border trade'.

At that time, no matter how many references were made about the Chinese border crossings in the north connected with Nepal, there has not been much change yet. Even now, the main trade route with China is Tatopani and Rasuwa.

Lately, even the government employees have not been able to sit at the Korala border crossing of Mustang. Regular and institutional business has not been done yet. Although efforts have been made to provide road tracks to other checkpoints compared to three decades ago, transmission of a permanent nature has not been made. The Customs and Immigration Office has not been able to open regularly. But India is increasing the 'connection' with Tibet by expanding easy access to the border crossings.
