What you should know
AIDS disease is not heard much nowadays. Now many people may not believe that after getting this disease, they were on the verge of death. But in the 50s, AIDS was called a latent monster by experts.
Experts used to say, ``AIDS is like a volcano that explodes quickly.'' AIDS was seen as a slow monster because it spreads inside without knowing and causes death after contracting the disease.
This disease, which is transmitted through sexual contact or blood, is now cured after taking regular medication. Therefore, its discussion is less . AIDS terrorized the world from the 50s to the 60s due to the lack of drug discovery. HIV is the name of a virus. After this virus enters the body, it is believed to be AIDS. The government of Nepal was also spending crores every year with foreign aid to control this disease.
This disease, which was discovered in Africa in the 40s, was announced by the researchers until the year 2000, when Asia will be the most affected by AIDS. AIDS spread from Africa to Europe, America and Asian countries.
Asia Regional Office Bangkok AIDS Control and Prevention Project (AIDSCAP) assessment and communicable disease specialist Stephen Chell in the statement released in 2051 stated that the number of AIDS patients worldwide reached 600,000. In Thailand alone, 3 thousand 1 AIDS patients were found at that time . A survey by the Thai Red Cross Society revealed that nearly 200,000 women are engaged in sex work in Mumbai and about 50 percent of them are suffering from AIDS.
Due to the open border, Thai Red Cross released the data that 6 to 7 thousand women are sold in different cities for sex trade from Nepal to India every year . Some of them were expelled after they found out that they had AIDS, while some returned on their own.
Nepal did not have a place to keep AIDS patients at that time. The society also used to view AIDS patients negatively. Campaigners said that after coming to Nepal, they have more chances of transmitting AIDS. Because there was no other option to live, those who got AIDS used to turn to sex again . Therefore, it was feared that this disease would spread more dangerously.
The head of the sexual control project Dr. Benu Bahadur Karki said only 50,000 of those who had sex used condoms. He informed that there is a greater risk of such people returning to Nepal and transmitting AIDS.
Director of AIDS Prevention and Control Project Asia Region. Neil Wrenden used to say that changes in sexual behavior and the use of condoms are the key to AIDS control . AIDS was difficult to control because it could not be detected immediately. Dr. Vrenden emphasized that there should be provision for getting condoms on the go.
It used to be difficult to find people suffering from AIDS due to the secretive sexual activities in Nepal. At that time, men from the Far West mostly went to India in search of work. A large number of women went to India from Kathmandu and surrounding districts.
The news prepared by journalist Swastika Bhattarai was published by Kantipur Dainik on 17 Baisakh 2051 under the title 'AIDS: Even without treatment, control is possible.'
