On November 4, 2050, the Central Committee meeting of the Congress decided to make the then President of the Congress, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, a candidate for the Member of the House of Representatives in the by-election of Kathmandu Constituency No. 1. But that decision was not liked by the then Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.
His dissatisfaction was confirmed by the 17-minute radio statement given by Prime Minister Koirala on 17th January 2050 while Bhattarai's election campaign was going on. The statement read by him was broadcasted by Radio Nepal. Bhattarai's voters and well-wishers were also confused after the statement came from Radio Nepal. Koirala held the view that it was not necessary for Bhattarai to win the election indirectly through the statement. After the release of the
statement, there was a big stir in the Congress. There was a sign that this would increase the conflict within the party. In order to solve it, Congress leader Ganeshman Singh, Bhattarai and Koirala sat on the same platform and gave a message that they were united.
But the background that was created before the election, the activities of Koirala and his followers gave a clear indication that Bhattarai would be defeated . There were reports that Bhattarai was going to lose the election by sitting in various places and saying that he was from the Koirala party and some youth leaders. Some of the leaders who campaigned to defeat Bhattarai are still working in the "front line" of the party. Some are MPs while others are away from party activities .
2050 In the by-election of 25th of January, a party within the party stood up for the argument that Bhattarai should not be nominated. At that time, one camp of the party expressed dissatisfaction with Bhattarai's candidature. Needless to say, there were indications that Bhattarai would be defeated as the counting of votes in the election was not completed. After Bhattarai trailed by nearly 6,000 votes, all the blame was put on Prime Minister Koirala and his group.
After the chances of defeat by UML candidate Bidya Bhandari in the vote counting increased, a party of Congress protested against Prime Minister Girija Prasad in the capital. . In the evening of 26th January, 2050, the youth of the Congress chanted the slogan of Prime Minister Koirala is dead, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai is alive, Nepali Congress is alive. The youth accused Prime Minister Koirala of conspiring with UML to defeat Bhattarai.
Especially the procession taken out by the students of Navy Sangh went towards the Prime Minister's residence Baluwatar . After the procession moved towards Baluwatar, a large number of police were mobilized to maintain peace and security. The workers of Navy Sangh said that Koirala should resign as Bhattarai lost after intervening.
After the workers of their own party surrounded Baluwatar by shouting slogans against the Prime Minister, 7/8 trucks of armed police were deployed at the Prime Minister's residence. A large number of police were mobilized around Baluwatar. The procession against Koirala was going towards Baluwatar on the evening of 26th January when the police stopped it after reaching Rashtra Bank.
The participants of the procession looked very disappointed and sometimes they were also excited . The agitated procession also tried to assault Kantipur Daily's photojournalists Chandrashekhar Karki and Vikas Rauniyar. They went to photograph the procession .
At that time, the president of the Navy was NP Saud . He had refused to respond to the issue of procession and election of Bhattarai . Kantipur Dainik published a news titled "Proceeding of Neka Workers in Opposition to the Prime Minister" on January 27, 2050, covering the issue of dissatisfaction in the party after getting indications that Bhattarai would be defeated as a result of the internal strife of the Congress.
UML's then General Secretary Madan Bhandari and Jivraj Ashrit died in a Dasdhunga jeep accident in May 2050 and by-elections were held in Kathmandu-1. UML nominated Madan's wife Vidya. There was a danger that the sympathy vote of the common people would go to Vidya, and it was already hinted that Bhattarai would be defeated by the internal strife of the Congress.
Prime Minister Koirala understood that Bhattarai winning the election meant that an alternative candidate for the Prime Minister would be prepared against him.
