A 17-minute long radio statement released by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on January 17, 2050, a week before the by-elections, made Nepali Congress President and Kathmandu Region No. 1 candidate Krishna Prasad Bhattarai very uncomfortable. With Koirala's statement, the incident of leaders within the Congress starting to campaign to defeat Bhattarai was becoming public.
The leaders of the party's fraternal organization Nepal Vidyarthi Sangh (who are still in party politics and parliament) were talking about the campaign to defeat Bhattarai in the design of the Koirala group.
After it was confirmed that the Koirala faction would not cooperate in the election, pressure was created on the initiative of the then young leaders and well-wishers of the Congress to resolve the dispute between the leaders and give a message of unity. At that time, Ramchandra Paudel, Govindaraj Joshi, Mahesh Acharya, Sher Bahadur Deuba, Tarni Dutt Chatout, Ram Sharan Mahat and others from the party took the initiative to reconcile Netatraya.
After two days of talks between the leaders, it was agreed to go together in the elections and to create an atmosphere of reconciliation in the party. On the 19th of January 2050, at the second day of the meeting between the leaders of the Congress at Chaksibari house of Ganeshman Singh, it was decided that the internal problems within the party would be resolved and Prime Minister Koirala would also help Bhattarai win the elections. It was also agreed to help in the
election and convey the message in a more clear manner so as not to send a negative message to some of the issues included in the statement given by Koirala . In the previous day's meeting in Baluwatar, Prime Minister Koirala said that his statement was correct. On January 18, after the Baluwatar talks were over, Koirala said, 'The conversation took place today, the marriage will take place tomorrow.'
After re-discussing the agenda of the previous day's meeting on January 19, Netatraya reached an agreement. Chairman Bhattarai stopped Netatraya from making a single statement. Bhattarai had said that he would give a separate statement saying that he should keep his own opinion.
Koirala also said that he would give a statement. But it was not certain whether Koirala and Supreme Leader Ganeshmaman would go to Bhattarai's election campaign. Ganeshman said to the mediapersons, 'When the speech comes, it happens even if you don't go to the election campaign.' Koirala, in a statement released three days ago, expressed his displeasure with Bhattarai's candidacy and the issues raised during the election campaign. His statement directly affected Bhattarai's election.
The news written by journalists Taranath Dahal and Suman Pradhan was published on January 20, 2050 by Kantipur covering the internal strife within the Congress, Koirala's statement and by-elections.
Madan Bhandari, the then General Secretary of UML and Jivraj Ashrit died in a Dasdhunga accident on May 3, 2050 during the parliamentary elections of 2048. By-elections were scheduled to be held on January 25, 2050 as the post of member of the House of Representatives was vacant in Kathmandu-1 won by Bhandari. UML nominated Madan's wife Vidya Bhandari as a candidate in that area.
Bhattarai, who was defeated by Madan, contested against Madan's wife Vidya in the by-election. Congress was afraid of sympathy votes for Vidya. Amal was gathering sympathy from all over the country saying that the murder of Madan-Ashrit was a conspiracy.
