In the 1950s, carpets, garments, tourism business and pashmina production were the major Nepali products that earned foreign exchange. US Ambassador to Nepal Julia Chang Block said in a program on 'Possibilities of economic progress in Nepal' organized by the Rotary Club in 2050 Baisakh, 'The main source of foreign currency income can be carpets, garments and tourism.'

His statement also gave a message that the goods produced in Nepal are worth exporting to foreign countries . As much as Nepal has earned a name in handicrafts, crafts and woodwork, pashmina was also seen as an excellent product.

The production of pashmina started by the late Padam Bahadur Gurung of Kathmandu about 77 years ago in Nepal continued and gained a lot of buzz till the 50s.

Pashmina was established as a precious item that Nepali gave as a gift to natives and foreigners. Although the production of Pashmina was low in terms of quantity, it became the choice of everyone because of its quality. In 1987, Everest Pashmina Art earned 3 lakhs in 15 days at the Trade Fair International held in India. The participants of the fair said that the amount earned from Pashmina at that time was high.

The message was sent that Nepali pashmina market is good because one industry earns so much. 15 family members worked in the Everest pashmina industry . There were also borrowers to run the pashmina industry . But the businessman said that there is no problem in paying the loan as there is profit.

Nowadays, the practice of making pashmina shawls by machines has increased. At that time, it was mostly done by hand. That's why foreigners used to like Nepali pashmina saying 'hand made'. Therefore, it was customary to present pashmina items to the president or any foreign guest in public events.

It was also a tradition to wear a pashmina shawl as a gift to the President and Prime Minister's wife of many countries. At that time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs purchased pashmina from the factory to give gifts to foreigners.

In the year 2051, a pashmina shawl cost 4 to 8 thousand rupees. Good quality Pashmina is very soft and smooth. At that time, Everest Pashmina used to sell up to 100 units a day. The wool used to make the pashmina came from Tibet. Now it is being brought from countries like Mongolia, China, and Australia. Currently, exports are mainly to Europe, America and Japan. Now there are nearly 800 shops selling pashmina in Nepal. There are more than two hundred factories that only weave pashmina, while the registered industries are around four hundred .

Some industries make pashmina and wool sweaters . According to the businessmen, even now according to government data, pashmina worth about 4 billion is exported from the country every year. But if we include the informal market and the tourist sector, nearly 10 billion pashminas go abroad every year.

There are Pashmina sales centers openly in Chitwan, Pokhara, Thamel, Buddh and other tourist areas. The problem of selling fake pashmina made in India or brought from other places under the Nepali brand has been a challenge for four decades. Almost four decades ago, the news prepared by Raj Gautam for Development Communication Center covering the situation of pashmina industry in Nepal, marketing and entrepreneur's experience was published by Kantipur Dainik on 2nd March 2050 under the title "Nepali pashmina popular among foreigners".

Businessmen say that the future of pashmina industry, which is made in Nepal by bringing raw materials, is still bright. But they say that Nepali brand marketing is weak.
