At present, as soon as you say masham, it is understood as a white dough made by keeping buff (rooster and buffalo), chicken (chicken) and veg (vegetables, paneer etc.) in flour. From children to the elderly, there are hardly any who are not connoisseurs of masham.
Now, not only in Kathmandu Valley, but also in villages, markets and Lekali settlements, the habit of eating masham is increasing. Not only in the city market, the habit of making masham at home is also growing. Fashion shops are found in chokchoks and alleys with different names.
Until the 60s, Mahabuddha was known as the place to get magic in Kathmandu Valley. It is still known but its market has widened and gone everywhere. My brand has also been launched .
It is estimated that there are only 60-70 brands of masham known by different names in the valley. But now masham is sold from sweet shops to tea shops. Masham is considered as a popular snack of rich, poor and middle class alike . Hotels selling perfumes have opened up everywhere. Not only Kathmandu valley, the situation is like this all over the country.
Until the 1950s, chicken and chicken meat was not very popular. Most of the older generation who have passed the age of 50 have probably learned to eat masham made from buffalo meat. At that time, there was a custom of making masham from wild boar meat. At present, masham is prepared using millet and sorghum.
At that time only buff masham was found in Mahabuddha . There is still a fashion shop at that place. The number has decreased. At that time, the main places to get masham were Mahabuddh, Kamalakshi, Buddh, Putli Street, Kalikasthan, New Road, Bhagwati Bhasham, Darbarmarg, Bhimsensthan, Batu Galli, Chokache Galli and others. Compared to Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, Kathmandu had more luxury hotels or shops.
32 years ago, the Maham Hotel in Kathmandu was considered very big when it had a daily business of 3,000. At that time, the price per plate was 15 to 25 rupees. Hotels in important places including Darbarmarg used to charge more than hundred per plate.
At that time, a single masham hotel employed up to 15 people . It became an important place of employment. Kantipur published a news article on 26th August 2050 with the main theme of the fashion business in the valley under the title "Attractiveness of Business: Fashion Shops of Kathmandu".
