[Archive] American designers in Kathmandu to boost production of Nepalese carpets

Until three decades ago, carpet export was also an important part of Nepal's main source of foreign exchange earnings. In the 1950s, Nepali goods worth 13 to 14 billion rupees were exported from Nepal annually, and carpets accounted for almost 60 percent of them.

According to government data at the time, Germany exported about 6 billion worth of carpets in 1990/92. The biggest market for carpets was Germany. Annually, 2.5 million square meters of carpets were exported to Germany. Another market for Nepali carpet export was America. Therefore, in an event held in Kathmandu on 27 Baisakh, the then American ambassador to Nepal, Julia Chang Block, said that carpets are also a commodity that can be used to increase Nepal's exports to earn foreign currency.

Especially in the 90s, the era of economic liberalization was considered to have started worldwide due to the overthrow of communist rulers in countries including the Soviet Union and Germany. After the 2046 change in Nepal, the economic liberalization embraced by the government had created an investment environment. In the same line, there was a lot of speculation about running a carpet factory and exporting carpets.  American designs came to Nepal with the purpose of weaving Nepali carpets by giving

designs themselves. In August 2050, a conference titled 'American Market for Nepali Carpets' was held in Kathmandu under the auspices of the Central Carpet Industry Association and sponsored by the United States of America (USID). The special purpose of the conference was to find an alternative market for Nepali carpets.

In a seminar organized with the participation of Nepali government, American Embassy officials and Nepali carpet products, Peter S. Gadzinski in the Political and Economic Department of the American Embassy said that the carpet industry, which has the most potential to earn foreign exchange, will be helped. At that time, it was discussed that there was a lot of child labor in the Nepali carpet industry. Especially non-governmental organizations raised it . There was a complaint from the investors that the Nepali carpet industry was ruined by raising more than it was.

The then Minister of State for Commerce, Surendra Prasad Choudhary, said that unnecessary rumors about using children to weave carpets were blown up. At that time, the use of child labor had a negative impact on the carpet industry. Rather than organizing it, the campaign to remove it from the factory was carried out, and it also affected the international market.

In this conference, President of the Carpet Industry Association Vijay Bahadur Shrestha said that since only 1 percent of Nepali carpets are exported to the US, a policy should be made to increase them . According to him, the designers there were involved in the program to produce American designs to increase exports. American designers came to discuss the designs and colors of Nepali carpets. They used to say that if they could weave carpets the way Americans wanted, exports would be high .

At that time, only about 23,000 square meters of carpets were being exported to America. At that time, around 2.3 million square meters of carpets were produced in Nepal. American embassy officials used to say that there are no carpets of Nepali design and that only Tibetan design is called Nepali . It could also be understood that Nepali carpets are still not recognized in the international arena.

American officials suggested that if carpets can be sent to America and Canada, the market can be expanded to European countries as well. With the aim of making the design of carpets that Americans like and assisting in exports, the US was assisting in conducting seminars and training through USID.

About the carpet industry that is enthusiastically earning foreign exchange by exporting Nepal's products and its market expansion, the news titled 'Carpets also have Nepali design?' was published on the front page of Kantipur Dainik on August 20, 2050.
