[Archive] After MP Golche Sarki punched Acting Interior Minister four times...

Parliament was suddenly heated up after National Assembly MP Golche Sarki punched Ramchandra Paudel, Minister of Local Development and Agriculture, who also held the responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs. On July 6, 2050, while returning from Rostam, Sarki punched Ramchandra Poudel four times, who was sitting on a chair in the front row of the Parliament building with his hand on his cheek.

Since Home Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba went to Thimphu to discuss the issue of Bhutanese refugees, Paudel was also given the responsibility of Acting Home Minister.

UML, the then main opposition party in the parliament, was running a protest program across the country, including the capital Kathmandu, saying that there was no fair investigation into the Dasdhunga jeep accident. The police arrested and detained the UML MPs who participated in the chakkajam in Kathmandu.

The dispute between the government and the UML became huge at that time regarding the Dasdhunga accident. The incident of arresting the parliamentarians who were caught in a jam was a recent incident. Ramchandra Poudel, as the Home Minister, appeared in the National Assembly to answer the same issue.

Before Paudel answered, UML MP Sarki got the opportunity to speak on behalf of the MPs arrested in Zakkajam. While returning from Rostam after speaking, he punched Ramchandra who was sitting on the previous chair with his hand on his cheek. After he punched, there was an uproar in the parliament. MPs from both sides rose up excitedly. This was probably the first incident of a MP punching a minister during a parliamentary exercise in Nepal.

Basu Risal, leader of the National Assembly of the ruling Congress, demanded the expulsion of MP Golche Saraki. MP Golche Sarki left the meeting room after strong protest by MP Jagdish Shamsher and others. Soon after, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Beni Bahadur Karki, announced that he would not be able to participate in the meeting for 7 days.

UML MPs strongly opposed the announcement, while Congress MPs supported the announcement. The MPs of UML protested in the Parliament demanding the withdrawal of the action against Sarki. But Speaker Karki said that since he ran away from Parliament, he apologized in writing and could be considered according to the National Assembly Rules.

Madhav Kumar Nepal, the leader of the main opposition party in the National Assembly, responded that it was not appropriate to attack the minister. But he also said that action is not the solution to the problem. Nepali Congress Member of Parliament Narahari Acharya accused the opposition of trying to use mudki . He pointed to UML and asked how he would act if he came to power.

Minister Paudel questioned whether he would maintain the dignity of the House or not. He said that the minority cannot be held hostage by the majority. UML MP Pradeep Nepal asked President Karki to withdraw the action against MP Sarki. But Karki reiterated his position that he has proceeded with the process of action according to the regulations.

The opposition UML MPs raised slogans against the government for about 10 minutes in the National Assembly. The Congress MPs had challenged the opposition to bring a no-confidence motion against the government if they dared. After the slogans were raised, ruling party MPs Chetkumari Dahal, Dilli Prasad Acharya and Minister of State for Finance Mahesh Acharya objected.

The issue of the MP punching the minister inside the parliament was discussed all over the country . In addition, the government and the opposition were criticizing each other for a long time regarding the handling of Paudel, who is also a front-line leader of the Congress. Based on this context, the news "Hands on Minister Poudel: MP Sarki suspended" was published by Kantipur Daily on 7th July 2050.
