It has been 31 years since the death of then UML General Secretary Madan Kumar Bhandari and Head of Organization Department Jivraj Ashrit in the Dasdhunga jeep accident. But this subject is still raised from time to time in the form of public consumption in connection with politics.

On June 3, 2050, the then general secretary of UML Bhandari and the dependent of the head of the organization department died in a jeep accident. Due to this incident, the country was in a state of unrest for months. It was not a natural accident but a planned killing of both the leaders. When the UML became a leader-activist, not only did the streets heat up, some people also lost their lives . Physical structure was also damaged during the protest.

UML leaders-activists were very angry saying that the death of their popular leader was not natural. Deadly slogans were raised against the then Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on the streets. Some of the UML workers used to accuse the Congress of conspiring to assassinate their leaders.

UML's high-level leaders used to accuse Madan and Ashrit's driver Amar Lama of not allowing proper investigation by the Congress. The UML leaders used to insist that the killer would be found after driving a pin in the driver's nail. The driver Lama was in jail. Even the general public did not take the accident for granted . The government was under a kind of pressure .

The government formed a one-member commission under the chairmanship of the former additional judge of the Supreme Court, Prachandaraj Anil, on May 4, 2050, the day after the Dasdhunga accident. Similarly, UML also formed a commission under the chairmanship of Standing Committee member and MP KP Sharma Oli on 5th May 2050 to investigate internally. But the issue of the accident became more complicated after the reports prepared and submitted by the Anil Commission formed by the government and the Oli Commission of the UML did not agree with each other. The verdict of both commissions was different .

Anil Aayog's report submitted to the government, the UML considered the matter as completely one-sided, misleading and untrue . In the report submitted by the Oli commission to the central committee of the party, the accidents of stewards and dependents were termed as 'planned and conspiratorial'. In the Oli report, it was mentioned that ``the direct perpetrator of the carnage was the driver Amar La, but he was not the only one''.

The UML was of the opinion that the accident was not natural due to the driver Lama's physical and mental condition, the post-mortem report, the statements of the eyewitnesses, and the repeated attempts of the driver Lama to lie. UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal gave brief information about the report of the Oli Commission through a statement. The said report was submitted by Oli to the party on June 3, 2050. The UML central committee meeting accepted the report of the Oli commission and expelled Chalak Lama from the party membership calling him a conspirator and a traitor. He was also the secretary of UML Tanahun-Kathmandu Liaison Committee. The jeep belonged to the UML party.

Anil Aayog concluded that there was no conspiracy in the accident. It was mentioned in Anil's report that no conspirator has been found . UML had been raising issues such as 'driver Amar talking to two foreigners in Pokhara, Madan-Ashrit's vehicle being chased by a motorcycle while returning from Pokhara'.

UML had said that since chaff and sand were piled up at the incident site in Dasdhunga, it also falls within the conspiracy. But Anil Commission mentioned in the report that it is not true. After not being satisfied with the report of the Anil Commission, the UML demanded the formation of a unanimous high-level empowered commission under the chairmanship of the sitting judge of the Supreme Court.

Madan-Ashrit's death in an accident was published by Kantipur Dainik on the front page of Kantipur Dainik on June 4, 2050.
