About 40,000 rickshaws were registered in the government records 32 years ago. Among them, 465 rickshaws operated in Kathmandu and 4000 in Biratnagar. It was estimated that 30,000 people were supported by the income of rickshaw drivers.
The local authority used to give permission to drive the rickshaw and the police also registered it. In Terai and interior Madhesh, the burden of local transport was borne by rickshaws. The then Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had also announced to give loans to laborers to buy rickshaws on May Day.
Locals used to say, 'Viratnagar is a city driven by rickshaws.' But Ashok Koirala, mayor of Biratnagar municipality, says that even if you are a rickshaw driver, you will not get a certificate of non-bribery. According to him, citizenship is also required for the permit. It costs 85 rupees to get the certificate. But there are complaints from rickshaw drivers that it will cost 4-500 after all the work is done . There are many who come down from the eastern hills to drive rickshaws.
In the year 2026, those who drove the rickshaw used to pay one rupee daily to the moneylender. But in the 50s, Deepak Khadka, who is known as the largest number of rickshaw owners in Biratnagar, earns 8,000 a day. He has 400 rickshaws. Indian rickshaws cannot come to Biratnagar from the Ranibari border area . If you come, you have to pay a fine of 25 rupees.
Although it is an industrial area, Biratnagar prefers to drive a rickshaw rather than work in an industry. Because, it is difficult to raise a family on the 8-9 hundred earned while working in a factory . They pay 25 rupees daily to moneylenders and earn 60 to 100 rupees daily. It costs 900 rupees for the purchase of a rickshaw. Even when they are sick, the pain of having to pay money to the creditor is bothering the workers.
At that time, the rickshaw was a vehicle for ordinary people and even big leaders. Manmohan Adhikari, the leader of the then main opposition party in the Parliament and President of the UML, traveled around Biratnagar in a rickshaw. When you see the hi-fi of the current political leadership, it seems that the picture of Manmohan riding a rickshaw at that time probably inspired the current leader . At that time there were very few people who owned private vehicles.
Biratnagar also had some old rental taxis . But they were not visible in the market. Biratnagar, three decades ago, the history of rickshaws, the condition of rickshaw workers and employment opportunities and the salinity of leaders, prepared by journalist Taranath Dahal, Kantipur published a feature news with a photo of Manmohan Adhikari riding a rickshaw on the inside page on May 3, 2050 .
