The Tanakpur Treaty is an interesting event in Nepali politics. Because, after the then Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala signed the treaty with India, its consequences were not only in the House but also in the internal politics of the Congress.

The left-wing party in the parliament and the ruling Nepali Congress have been divided into different poles for a long time regarding the Tanakpur Treaty. The streets and the House were also heated about this issue. Incidents of people taking part in the protest programs organized by the left-wing parties also started happening.

Left-wing parties were agitating on the issue of Tanakpur saying that Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had signed a treaty with India and that it was a disadvantage to Nepal. The left-wing parties were demanding that according to the constitution, the agreement on the distribution of natural resources should be passed by two-thirds of the parliament.

But Prime Minister Girija Prasad was of the position that Takpur was not a treaty but an understanding. The matter reached the Supreme Court. And the court ruled that this was not an agreement but a treaty. And the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting held on February 25, 2049 decided to pass the treaty by a simple majority of the Parliament.

Congress supreme leader Ganeshman Singh disagreed with this decision. He was in favor of passing the Tanakpur Treaty after seeking consent from the Parliament. His proposal was to support the left-wing parties as well. But after the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting decided to pass it by a simple majority of the Parliament, Ganeshman was dissatisfied.

Even though the left-wing parties are presented irresponsibly, Ganeshman said that the Congress should not forget its responsibility. The meeting of the parliamentary party held at Baluwatar, the private residence of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, instructed to submit the treaty to the parliament for approval by a simple majority.

This news of the internal discord caused by the Tanakpur Treaty within the Congress was published in the Kantipur Daily on February 26, 2049 under the title 'Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party Meeting: Tanakpur will be approved by simple majority'.

In this news, the sub-heading of Supreme Leader's letter also includes the topic of party's supreme leader Ganeshman Singh writing a letter to party president Krishna Prasad Bhattarai about his inability to attend the meeting . In the letter, Singh said, 'Today, both the nation and democracy are in crisis, and I am not saying that the opposition is not irresponsible and disorderly. Their irresponsible activities are also responsible for weakening democracy. But by saying that, we cannot shirk our responsibility' he wrote.
