Parties were banned during thirty years of autocratic Panchayat rule. In an underground form, the parties used to do their activities through student organizations in the form of fraternal organizations. The parties also used these student organizations to speak against the Panchayat. Because, the panchayat did not stop the student organization from doing formal activities.
After the establishment of democracy, parties became free to do political activities . And the student organizations began to focus on the issue of educational development rather than opposing the political system. Leaders from some student organizations joined party politics.
Student organizations with one voice in opposition to the Panchayat started competing with each other after the establishment of democracy. The first election of student organizations was held on February 15, 2049. More than one lakh students studying in 73 campuses of Mahendra Sanskrit University and Tribhuvan University and some private campuses participated in the voting.
Elections could not be held due to conflicts between student organizations in some campuses. The parties made the election of the student organization a matter of self-respect. Because, in this election, whichever organization won more seats, the popularity of the respective party was measured based on that. This election was also important to understand what kind of leaders are coming to the parties .
