Worried about Bhutanese refugees fleeing

Since it is a recent incident, many people know about the case of fake Bhutanese refugees. But many may not know how the history of Bhutanese refugees began, what happened after they came to Nepal as Nepali-speaking refugees who were chased from Bhutan, or those who know may have lost their memories.

In 1990, nearly 100,000 Bhutanese Hindus of Nepalese origin entered Nepal. After the Bhutan government expelled them from the country, they entered Nepal through the eastern border through India and started living as refugees in different camps in Jhapa and Morang.

Refugees were taking the initiative to internationalize this issue by saying that they were deported on the basis of religious, cultural and ethnic beliefs. 

It was not easy for those who entered Nepal through India to return to India. Because, India had taken an informal decision to allow the refugees to come to Nepal but not to return there. Human rights activists also started expressing interest and concern about such a role of India. 

Worried about Bhutanese refugees fleeing

Human rights activists expressed concern that the Bhutanese government was chasing them, India was not giving them a way to return, and the life of Bhutanese people of Nepalese origin in Nepal was becoming difficult. India has been giving an informal statement that they were not allowed to return because of friendly relations with Bhutan. Refugee leader Teknath Rizal used to say that the Bhutanese government has deported Bhutanese of Nepalese origin since 1988.

In this context, human rights workers formed the South Asian Human Rights Forum and demanded the return of Bhutanese refugees and the release of Bhutanese prisoners. Rights activists organized a two-day conference in Kathmandu and formed a platform. The platform expressed its concern about the human rights of Bhutanese refugees in a press conference.

Analyzing human rights in South Asia, the forum demanded the release of Myanmar's leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi.
