Naveen Chauhan is the director of the recently popular film 'Oonko Sweeter'. Naveen, who produced many famous musical films through Artmandu, always tried to tell stories through videos. More than a dozen musical films directed by him including Thienpate, Ghoomighumi, Phoolthunge Rani are popular among the audience. An edited part of the conversation with Naveen for E-Kantipur's regular column 'Five Questions':
What movie did you watch last time?
is 'Wuthering Heights' . This film is based on a love story. It shows a love story between black and white characters . This film has been shot with a very good cinematic approach. The low light element, the craft of cinema is very beautiful . As this film ends, it asks a big question to the human world. Are we humans or are we the first species?
Your favorite Nepali movie?
I like many Nepali films . Among them, Naveen Subba directed 'Numaphung' is very popular. I am also from Panchthar . The setting of Numafung is also around Panchthar . The cultural, economic and people's life shown in the film related to me . While watching this film, I feel that I am also a part of this culture . That's why 'Numafung' looks so beautiful to me.
What is your favorite foreign film?
The film 'The Road Home' directed by Zhang Yimou is a very beloved film. That film is synonymous with Sarlata . While telling the story of a village in China, the relationship between the two characters is a beautiful film that can affect you and take you to that society. This film looks very beautiful from the light, color and its technical aspects .
The positive and learning part of Nepali film ?
Nepal is a socially diverse society. It is a place with many stories. Films have been made from different approaches of mountains, hills and plains. Cinema always needs a cornerstone. That foundation is given by a society or group. Recently, Nepali films have started to be made with that thing in mind. This seems to be the most important and strong aspect.
Nepali film industry seems to have to correct itself technically . The complete process of the film pre-production, production Or giving enough time to post production is important. Here it is customary to set the release date on the same day as the announcement. As soon as you do that, the beauty of the cinema shrinks . The cinema may not be made the way it should be. The film can take a lot of time . You may have to stop in the middle . Sometimes a lot may have to be compromised . So we have to improve on this aspect.
film recommendation to the new generation ?
Films should not be recommended to the latest generation. Very forward . They are looking at it in their own way. There are films that I absolutely must not miss. To understand what our route is, I recommend watching Charlie Chaplin's films. I also recommend watching Satyajit Ray's movies . It can also be a good study of where our cinema has evolved from and how it has progressed.
