'I have managed my household expenses by running a tea and snack shop in the village'

There is a belief that learning skills can change one's life. Earlier, it was difficult to stay in the village for so long without skills. After receiving training, the ability to earn at least a few bucks on one's own has increased.

I have not been able to earn much profit in life. I have not had to sit empty-handed for that. I have decided to save even a little and grow my business.

Time is not always the same. You never know when something will happen. Still, I believe that if time supports me, my plan will be fulfilled. I live in Fukung, Dahu, Sunapati Rural Municipality-4, Ramechhap. With patience and dedication, you can gradually bring about changes in your life. This is also the story of my own change.

I am now approaching 40 years old. Until a few years ago, my daily life was limited to housework and mowing grass. Most of my time was spent caring for goats. But now I have become a shopkeeper. I am running a small tea-snack business in the village. This has made me self-reliant. I did not suddenly become a businesswoman from a housewife. Two years ago, I got the opportunity to take training on self-employment through the Community Development Society (CDS). It was a great thing for women living in villages like us to get such an opportunity.

Many women in the villages are still limited to household chores due to lack of skills. If they can be given skill-based training as per their needs, they can also earn some income by starting some venture in the village. Along with the training, the organization also provided financial support. That removed my dependence on my husband. The necessary materials received from the organization gave me the courage to start a business. Now, I am earning my own living by running a tea-snack shop in the village. I am able to manage my household expenses.

Even though they do not earn much, they are being helped to cover daily expenses and meet the needs of their children. They have gained the belief that learning skills can change their lives. Earlier, it was difficult to stay in the village for so long without skills. After receiving the training, my ability to earn at least a few bucks has increased. My decision was also supported by my family. Initially, since I had small children, there was no possibility of leaving and going outside to work. That is why I started a small hotel business in the village. Now I feel that I have done well in doing business.

My business is currently running normally. Business increases even more during the Bodhicitta Mala sales season in the village. At other times, I also have daily income. I am educating and raising my two children with this income. I am saving some money by cutting household expenses. I earn a good income during the Bodhicitta Mala season than at other times. I have always wanted to work in the hotel sector. That is why I started a business in the village after learning skills in this field. I haven't been able to earn much, but my meager income is helping me meet my household expenses.

In my experience, many women in the villages are still limited to household chores due to lack of skills. If they can be given skill-based training as per their needs, they can also earn income by starting some ventures in the village.

You don't have to shop for many things in the village. Even green vegetables grow in the garden. So you can meet your household expenses with a small income. This makes it easy to improve the financial situation of the family. If you also start some ventures, you can at least save your husband's earnings. That helps move the entire family forward. My experience is that if you have skills, opportunities and courage, you can become self-reliant even in the village.
