‘There is a special joy in running a business with family’

What you should know

Just a week before I came to Dolpa, the then Maoist rebels had attacked Dunai, the district headquarters. My father used to work as a security guard at Nepal Bank in Dunai. After being transferred from there, he quit his job. After that, he started running a snack shop.

My birthplace is Nepalgunj in Banke. However, I spent many years in Dolpa. I am still in Dolpa. After my father started a business in Dunai, my father, mother, brother and I came here. I have two sisters.

I was young when I came to Dunai. We reached Dunai by boarding a Nepal Airlines flight from Jufal. When we came by road, we had to walk for 10/12 days. After reaching Dunai, I also started helping in the snack shop that my father started. At that time, samosa and jeri were not made as snacks in Dunai. My father started cooking samosa and jeri here.

At that time, only snacks including malpua and khajuri were cooked in Dunai. When different types of snacks were cooked for the first time in the district, a crowd of people started eating. Business was going well. At that time, Nepal Food Corporation and Nepal Salt Corporation distributed rice and salt at reasonable prices only from Dunai in Dolpa. That is why we woke up at 3 in the morning and made breakfast.

Since the yield here was also low and food was available at a subsidized rate, people would come to buy rice even if they had to stay overnight. There would be a crowd of people who would stay overnight and come to eat breakfast in the morning. My brother and I would help our father and mother make breakfast in the shop as much as we could. I also grew up learning the job with my father. I completed my primary and secondary education in Dunai.

In the meantime, I learned to make jerry, puri, and samosa. Later, I went to Nepagunj to study grades 11 and 12. After completing my second year, I started studying BBS. Later, I went to Dubai for employment. I stayed for about 6 years and returned. I worked as a caterer at the airport. I earned a good income. Later, I returned to Nepal to do something in my own country. There is a special joy in doing business with my family.

After my father's Sharma Hotel and Lodge gained fame in the district, I opened a snack shop in Tripurakot Bagar, Tripurasundari Municipality-1. It has been three years since I started my own business. During this period, I am completely satisfied with the business I started. Now my business in Tripurakot is doing well. I am 33 years old.

I got married in Sikkim. I have a daughter. I wake up at 4 in the morning. I cook and sell snacks such as samosa, jerry, puri, sekuwa, maam. We, the husband and wife, have shaped the business well. During the festivals, the business reaches up to fifty thousand rupees daily. It is a small place, and the population is also low. But my business has not decreased. I am happy about that.

I still work 14/15 hours a day. I also earn income according to the work I do. My father and brother are running a snack shop in Dunai. My father opened a snack shop in Dunai and added many things to his family and household. He gave us education. That is his income. My goal is also to add money to his family and save for old age with the income from the business. Whether it is by getting a job or doing business - this is the goal of most people.

If you put your mind and heart into your work, you can earn good money in Nepal. You don't have to go abroad. I can say this with confidence. For that, you definitely need skills and hard work.

Customers who come to the snack shop also give good feedback. They openly praise the snacks here. It makes me very happy when customers tell me that my snack shop serves clean, cheap and delicious snacks. I also strive to serve customers delicious and plentiful snacks for as little money as possible.

You can eat a full meal at my snack shop for fifty rupees. One of the main advantages of business is that it can be passed on to your children. I understood that after I got it. So that children don't have to be unemployed. There are many examples of children taking over the business of their parents.

My father also did the same to me. My father has a lot to contribute to this. Currently, we have two lunch shops in Dunai and Tripurakot. I hope to expand my business to other areas in the near future.
