”I work hard on my own land, I make ends meet by selling vegetables on my own.”

What you should know

I am currently cultivating vegetables on my own two ropanis of land. I mostly plant vegetables out of season. I grow vegetables including tomatoes, beans, potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, okra, bitter gourd, sosta, ghiraula and gourd. I always produce a little or nothing.

My wife and daughter-in-law help me in vegetable production. I earn lakhs/one and a half lakhs by selling vegetables in Tamghas every year. The cost of hard work is not significant. About half of the vegetables sold are profitable. I earn about 75 thousand in a year.

I am now 55 years old. My home is in Darlamchaur, Isma Rural Municipality-3. Apart from agriculture, I have no other profession or business. Even if I earn a little, I am able to meet my household expenses. I don't need anything like that in the kitchen. Dal, rice and vegetables are enough. I don't need to buy vegetables. Buying rice and dal is not such a big expense. Household expenses are met within normal expenses. It is not like I need separate money to buy clothes yet. But, sometimes, this is enough to change one or two pairs of clothes.

The money earned from this is still covering the household expenses. I have never had such a big dream. I feel that even if there is sorrow, there should be no pain. If there is no disease or hardship, what else is needed! That is why our family is happy with this.

I first went to India to earn money. I worked in various places in India for 11 years. No matter how much I struggled with my work in a hotel, I did not earn that much. I did not save even a little. I barely covered the household expenses. After that, I came to the field where I sowed only corn and started cultivating off-season vegetables. This has made household expenses much easier than before.

Now I have also kept three beehives at home. This is also providing income. My goal is to have 20 beehives. Earlier, I have also taken training from the Agriculture Office as a farmer. The training gave me more encouragement to be attracted to the agricultural profession.

Although I could not produce so much commercially, my income has increased by farming in a modern way compared to traditional farming. It has been 10 years since I started earning a living by selling vegetables. But I am not tired yet. I am the main man of the house. So I have no excuse to get tired. I have the support and cooperation of my family in this profession. So that even if it is a little, farming, selling and earning income is happening.

I dared to plant vegetables in the fields where I used to grow corn and millet. So that at least I made the old farming new. Sales are happening little by little. I have done vegetable farming normally. Due to which, I carry the tamghas to the district headquarters on my head and sell them in the market myself. Due to this, not only vegetables, but also my and my family's hard work is getting value.

Those involved in agriculture, including vegetable farming, are in a situation where they expect big results at once and are displaced when they are not achieved. I am cultivating vegetables as best I can without any shame. That is why I am staying in this profession. If you want to work in agriculture and animal husbandry, you should be ready to work hard and dedicate yourself.
