”My life is like a book written in sweat”

Hurling, hurling because the handle and wheel are broken. Lal Bahadur Raidas of Kapilvastu is always worried about when he will break down and fight, but still, he and his family are able to spend their evenings and mornings by driving the same rickshaw.

Even if old age wears it down, if the hands and feet are not cut, the stove will not be lit in the morning and evening. Because the family is poor, they do not have any comfort. No source of income. My real estate is this old rickshaw.

I have been driving this rickshaw with difficulty. Now I am 59 years old. Even while driving a rickshaw, I pray to God. God did not call for a good income. I wished the passengers in the rickshaw to be safe .

The frame and body of my rickshaw is about to break in places . I am driving with Jugad while welding. The handle and the wheel are also broken and hurling, hurling . It is crushed in places. There is always tension as to when it will break down and fight. If you have to drive a rickshaw in anxiety, you will be washed . That's why I carry more stuff than people now. As you say, sometimes it happens! That's why I carry what I find.

Now I live in Kapilvastu Municipality-3, Sikatwa . They say that even the river returns in 12 years . This is my 5th rickshaw . It has been 12 years since he started driving a rickshaw. When will I get a new one? Thinking about that, the night is cut short . After washing my face in the morning, I take the same rickshaw and go around the city market again. When I was a child, there was no reading environment . The poor and disadvantaged studied up to 2nd standard. I could not teach my two sons and two daughters above 5/6 standard . After the marriage of two daughters, now there is a family of 6 people.

There is no land except the four corners . On that land, a family of 6 lives in a hut with two rooms and a balcony with a tin roof. The eldest son got married and a grandson has just been born. We cook rice, eat, sleep and live in the same room. That too was built two years ago for 380,000 by Janata Awas program. Otherwise, we were living in a house with a mud roof and a thatched roof. Everything must be bought and eaten.

I have been delivering household goods, clothes, medicines and stoves from all the rickshaw earnings . Sukhna, a 50-year-old wife, sometimes helps after the birth of someone's child by taking care of the delivery. After cultivating the fields, it takes 6 months to reach rice. Otherwise you have to buy everything else. Has 20 and 13 year old sons . They also have no skill in their hands. They say they will go abroad, but there is no cost to send them.

There are one or two goats at home. Now they walk behind them. The age has gone by saying that he will earn and eat deliciously, he will bring good things . Rickshaw earnings are not that much now. It is also difficult to drive a rickshaw in old age . Now there are new e-rickshaws, tempos and jeeps. Few people ask for a rickshaw. However, it is this rickshaw to call your Srisampatti . It had to be used. Big dreams were not and still are not. But, I used to be happy if I could get a new rickshaw from anywhere, so I used to live well at home .

It's been almost 40 years since I started driving a rickshaw. Earlier I drove 4 rickshaws . This is my 5th rickshaw . This too was donated by a monk in Lumbini. When I used to drive a rickshaw, it was available for 6/7 thousand . Now it has reached 30 thousand . It is a dream for me to buy a rickshaw myself. That's why meeting a donor was like meeting God. Whatever the dream, desire, purpose is, that's all . Earlier, I used to earn 200 to 1000 per day by driving a rickshaw. It ran the household . But, now it is difficult to earn even two hundred .

Money was expensive when earning little at first . Now earning more money has become cheaper. Inequality has increased due to the inability of the government to control inflation. We Nepalis are getting richer and richer and the poor are getting poorer. My life is like that of a poor village worker, that's exactly what it is. They say! Like a book written in sweat. Yes, so is my life .

Around 049/50, there was no bridge in Ramghat to go to and from the headquarters Taulihawa. We used to take a rickshaw fare of Rs.5 per person to go to Ramghat, which is about 3 and a half km from Taulihwa. But now we take a rickshaw fare of Rs 50 per person. However, it seems that 5 rupees is more than now.
