On this day (May 8) in 2016, Sadiq Khan was elected as the mayor of London, the British capital. Khan, who became a candidate from the Labor Party, defeated Jack Goldsmith of the Conservatives.

Khan is the first Muslim leader to be elected mayor of a major Western city. Khan, who assumed office on May 9, 2016, was re-elected for a second term in 2021 for a three-year term. He will hold the post of Mayor until May 2, 2024.

 In 2018, Khan was included in Time magazine's list of 100 most influential people, who has led various policy reforms in London's public transport sector. Before being elected mayor, Khan was a member of the British Parliament from 2005 to 2016. Khan was born on October 8, 1970 in a British-Pakistani family.
