Sohail Tanvir will turn 40 in 9 days. However, the cricket passion of this Pakistani veteran of the fast bowler is still the same. He is eager to give 100 percent on the field. He arrived in Kathmandu from Canada just two days ago to play NPL for Chitwan Rhinos.
Unique Devrehate bowling is his weapon. He took 5 wickets in the match against Kathmandu Gurkhaz on Monday using the same weapon. He was adjudged player of the match. Tanveer's dialogue with the media in the postmatch conference:
How difficult was it to bowl on this wicket of Nepal?
Bowling in T20 is not easy. It is very difficult. However, I have more than 400 games of experience. The experience helped me a lot in bowling by looking at the conditions and understanding how the pitch is behaving. In the beginning there was a sim movement. But, it is better to understand the condition and bowl accordingly.
Faced three fours from Michael Levitt, did you have any plans to get him out immediately?
Levitt was hitting a boundary. I was trying to nick her, but was not successful. Then I bowled according to plan 'B' and succeeded. Sometimes this may not be successful. But today was a lucky day for me.
You came late to Kathmandu and did not have time to prepare. How did you prepare for such a wicket?
I have played a lot of cricket in this subcontinent. However, I did not play in Nepal. I have played in Bangladesh, the pitch there is slow and a lot of spin helps. I didn't have much time to soak in the conditioning. Sunday was our practice session. I had a long flight from Canada, so I didn't have much time once I got here. I only used my experience to understand this situation quickly.
You and Ravi Bopara have played in many leagues, the team has some young talent. Have you thought about how to take it forward simultaneously?
We have a good team. There are young players. Of course as a team we want to win. Personally, I want to transfer my experience to young Nepalese players, so that they can progress in their game. This is the purpose of my coming here. I have been playing for 20 years. I still have the patience to play cricket. The main thing is to share my experience with the players here. I am open to share this experience not only to my team, to others as well. We had a team meeting. I have told the young players of my team that if they need to understand something, they can come directly to me.
How important do you think NPL is for Nepal?
I have also played IPL. After the IPL, there were many changes in Indian cricket. IPL has given many cricketers to India. PSL has also given a lot to Pakistani cricket. Such a league will definitely help in the development of cricket in their country. If this league continues for a few years, then Nepali cricket will also take a leap.
Spectators have come from Chitwan to watch your game, how do you take it?
We are artists. We provide entertainment, but if no one watches it, it's no fun. Before coming here, I watched some videos on TV, I saw how fans watch their team play. So I was expecting such a supporter here.
