An example of the rewards of patience and continuity in politics is presented by Dr. Shahjan Khatun, 40, of Rautahat. Khatun, who was narrowly defeated for the post of Deputy Mayor of Gaur Municipality in the 2079 local level elections, has now become a member of the House of Representatives from the Nepali Congress through the proportional representation system.
A doctor by profession, Khatun is a resident of Gaur Municipality-1. Due to her intellectual and service-oriented image at the local level, she has been able to establish herself in politics in a short time. In the local level elections held in Baisakh, 2079, she entered the electoral fray for the post of Deputy Mayor of Gaur Municipality.
In the highly competitive election, Shail Kumar Sahasit of the then Unified Socialist Party was defeated by 1,124 votes. Sahat received 4,809 votes and Khatun received 3,685 votes. Even though the election results were not in her favor at that time, she maintained her proximity to the voters and the loyalty of the party. The Congress included Dr. Khatun in the proportional list, appreciating her political activism, professional skills, and representation of women and the Muslim community. She said that she understood society as a doctor and that after reaching the House of Representatives, she would make the health condition of Madhesh Province, women's empowerment, and education the main agenda. 'Even though I was defeated in the election yesterday, my determination to serve the people remained intact. Today, I will focus this responsibility given by the party on the development of Madhesh and especially on the improvement of the health sector,' she said. 'To heal the wounds of society, a doctor is not enough to give medicine, the state's policy must be people-friendly. In the coming days, I am on a campaign to further strengthen my political journey for the improvement of the health sector and the prosperity of Madhesh.'
Khatun, who completed her MBBS from Bangladesh, is running the Taiyab Health Care Hospital in Gaur, the district headquarters. Her husband is also a doctor. Her husband, Dr. Sarfaraz Taiyab, is in charge of the hospital. Locals believe that the entry of educated and skilled people into politics will have a positive impact on the policy-making level.
Khatun's name has been in the news recently in the politics and health sector of Madhesh Pradesh. Although she is a doctor by profession, she is currently active in the field of social transformation and politics. Dr. Khatun started her medical journey with a service-oriented spirit. Mohan Yadav, a social worker from Gaur, said that her contribution to women's health and reproductive health, especially in districts like Rautahat, is highly appreciated at the local level.
She joined the Nepali Congress in 2078 BS and entered active politics. Her father, Sheikh Nasim Akhtar, is also a long-time leader of the Nepali Congress in Birgunj. She said that she entered politics due to her father's inspiration. Born in Birgunj, she did her SLC from Miniland School in Birgunj, ISC from Harikhetan College and MBBS from Bangladesh. She married Sarfaraz Ekwal, a doctor from Gaur, in 2065 BS.
Dr. Khatun said that she will raise the issue of Madhesh in the house in the coming days after assuming responsibility as a member of the federal parliament. Representing the Muslim community and Madhesh women, she has been emphasizing the meaningful participation of women in politics.
She said that the main agenda for the development of Gaur Municipality and Rautahat as a whole should be education, health and infrastructure. Her colleague Dr. Yasmita Singh said that Dr. Khatun is a friendly and intellectual personality. "Although it was challenging in itself to reach the policy-making level after obtaining higher education from the Muslim community, she has overcome it and established herself as a successful female leader," she said. "Now she can do a lot of work in the health sector. We are very happy to see our colleague honored."
