Kathmandu Election Officer Thakur Prasad Bhattarai informed that although 250 candidates have registered their nominations in 10 constituencies in Kathmandu for the House of Representatives elections to be held on 21 Falgun, only 120 candidates have opened bank accounts for the election so far.
The Election Commission had instructed political parties not to spend or have spent election-related expenses through any means other than banks or financial institutions. Although the election code of conduct mentions this issue, half of the candidates have not opened bank accounts.
Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said that attention has been drawn to the fact that when receiving or spending more than Rs 25,000 for election purposes, a separate account should be opened in a bank or financial institution and the same account should be used.
He also informed that if the Commission orders, the bill of expenditure and details of the account in the bank or financial institution and the original bill and details of the bank or financial institution should be submitted.
According to geography, a candidate can spend from Rs 2.5 million to Rs 3.3 million.
