After the party's two general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma prepared to call a special general convention on 27-28 Poush, factional disputes have flared up within the party. However, since the issue of active membership across the country could not be finalized, the regular general convention will not be held.

Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba's establishment-oriented leaders are not ready to accept a special general convention. After the regular general convention was not held on the scheduled date, they now seem to be in favor of holding it after the general election on 21 Falgun. The different stances within the party regarding the general convention have sparked controversy in the party on the eve of the elections.
