What you should know

Out of the 250 candidates in Kathmandu, the federal capital, 219 have opened bank accounts so far.

250 candidates in 10 constituencies in Kathmandu have registered their nominations for the House of Representatives elections to be held on Falgun 21 and are actively campaigning. Of these, 219 have opened bank accounts to spend their election expenses so far, informed Information Officer Srijana Rayamajhi of the District Election Office, Kathmandu.

The Election Commission had instructed political parties on Falgun 3 that candidates should not spend their election-related expenses through any means other than banks or financial institutions. The Commission has been informing about this issue, which is mentioned in the election code of conduct, even before Falgun. Despite this, not all candidates in the capital Kathmandu have opened bank accounts.

The Commission has been instructing them before Falgun that candidates should not spend their election-related expenses through any means other than banks or financial institutions. The 63-point directive issued by the commission states that when receiving financial assistance of more than twenty-five thousand rupees, a separate account should be opened in a bank or financial institution and the assistance should be received and spent from that account.

If the commission orders to submit the bill of expenses and the details of the account in the bank or financial institution, the commission has stated that the original bill should be submitted and the details of the bank or financial institution's account should be submitted. According to the geography, a candidate can spend from 2.5 million to 3.3 million rupees. It is said that this time, monitoring is also being done to see where the money goes from the candidate's account to promote good governance.

The first-ever elected system will see that out of 3,406 candidates in 165 constituencies across the country, only 1,389 have opened bank accounts, according to the commission's assistant spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC.
